Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 463

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about water that is in open barren land (desert) and to which predators and animals come, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When water reaches the quantity of two large jars (qullatayn), nothing makes it impure."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), since they used all of its narrators as evidence, but they did not record it. I think they left it because of a discrepancy found in the route of Abu Usamah.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih, although there is disagreement over who narrated it from 'Abd Allah bin 'Abd Allah: Muhammad bin Ja'far bin al-Zubayr or Muhammad bin 'Abbad bin Ja'far?
Important point: This disagreement makes no difference, because both of them are thiqah (trustworthy) and among the narrators of al-Bukhari and Muslim (the two Shaykhs).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ishaq bin Ibrahim in the chain refers to "Ibn Rahawayh", and Abu Usamah refers to "Hammad bin Usamah".
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Abu Dawud (63), al-Nasa'i (50) and Ibn Hibban (1249, 1253) through various routes from Abu Usamah, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: With some narrators the name Muhammad bin 'Abbad bin Ja'far appears explicitly, and Imam Abu Dawud declared that to be correct.
Note / Clarification: The phrase "wa ma yanubuhu" means: whatever comes to it or befalls it. And "al-qullah" means a large earthenware jar (jarrah).
