Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The text in square brackets was not in our manuscripts; in manuscripts (Z) and (S) there was a blank space there. But it is established in the narration of Yahya bin Hammad from Abu Awanah in al-Nasa'i (8092, 8410) and others. Sharik al-Nakha'i also narrated it from al-A'mash in Abdullah bin Ahmad (al-Musnad: 2/ 951) and al-Bazzar (4300). With it the wording becomes clearer, so we have included it.
Grading: (2) Its chain is sahih, and al-Dhahabi graded it sahih (al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah: 4/ 416).
Note / Clarification: Abu Awanah is al-Waddah bin Abdullah al-Yashkuri, and Abu al-Tufayl is Amir bin Wathilah.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8092, 8410) narrated it from Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, from Yahya bin Hammad, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Its first half (mentioning the two weighty things, al-thaqalayn) was narrated by al-Tirmidhi (3788) via the route of Muhammad bin Fudayl, from al-A'mash, and he called it hasan gharib.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (32/ 19265), Muslim (2408) and al-Nasa'i (8119) narrated it via the route of Yazid bin Hayyan al-Taymi, from Zayd bin Arqam.
Note / Clarification: This half will come separately at (4762) via the route of Abu al-Duha Muslim bin Subayh from Zayd bin Arqam.
Reference / Source: Muslim (2408) and Ibn Hibban (123) narrated via the route of Yazid bin Hayyan from Zayd bin Arqam in these words: "I am leaving among you two weighty things; one of them is the Book of Allah, which is the rope of Allah: whoever follows it is upon guidance, and whoever abandons it is upon misguidance."
Reference / Source: Ahmad (19313) narrated via the route of Ali bin Rabi'ah, who said: I met Zayd bin Arqam as he was going in to al-Mukhtar or coming out from him, and I asked him: "Did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'I am leaving among you the two weighty things (al-thaqalayn)'?" He said: "Yes."
Reference / Source: Its second half (on the virtue of Ali) was narrated by Ahmad (19302), al-Nasa'i (8424) and Ibn Hibban (6931) via the route of Fitr bin Khalifah, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Ali and Zayd bin Arqam. The report will come next with both halves via the route of Muhammad bin Salamah bin Kuhayl, from his father, from Abu al-Tufayl.
Note / Clarification: It will also come at (6403) via the route of Kamil Abu al-Ala', from Habib bin Abi Thabit, from Yahya bin Ja'dah, from Zayd bin Arqam.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (32/ 19279) via the route of Atiyyah al-Awfi; (19325, 19328) via the route of Maymun Abu Abdullah; and (38/ 23143) via the route of Abu Sulayman Yazid bin Abdullah; all three from Zayd bin Arqam.
Important point: Al-Dhahabi said in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (14/ 277), in the biography of Muhammad bin Jarir al-Tabari: "Al-Tabari collected the routes of the hadith of Ghadir Khumm in four parts. I saw part of it and was amazed by the breadth of its narrations, and I became certain that it occurred."
Note / Clarification: Al-Dhahabi himself also wrote a treatise (juz') on the routes of this hadith, in which he passed judgement on each route one by one.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The words "Allahumma wali man walahu wa-'adi man 'adahu" (O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him) are supported by the hadith of Ali bin Abi Talib in Abdullah bin Ahmad (al-Musnad: 2/ 950) and al-Nasa'i (8419), and its chain is hasan. It has another route in which there is no harm, with al-Tabari, to which al-Dhahabi referred in his aforementioned treatise (38).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the hadith of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas in al-Nasa'i (8425, 8427); its chain is likewise hasan, and it will come with the author (al-Hakim) at (4651) through another route.
Important point: Al-Dhahabi said (as Ibn Kathir quoted from him in "al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah" 7/ 681): "His saying 'Allahumma wali man walahu' (O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him) is an addition with a strong chain."
Note / Clarification: "Ghadir Khumm": a place 8 kilometres east of al-Juhfah, known today as "al-Ghurbah".
Note / Clarification: "Al-dawhat" is the plural of "dawhah", which means a large tree.
Note / Clarification: "Qummimna" means: the rubbish beneath them was swept away.
Note / Clarification: The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying concerning the Book of Allah and his family ('itrah, the people of his House): "One of them is greater than the other". Al-Tibi said in "Sharh al-Mishkat" (12/ 3909): "The meaning of one of them being greater than the other is that the Qur'an is the model for the 'itrah; they must follow it, and they are the people most entitled to act upon what is in it."
Note / Clarification: And his saying: "They will not separate until they come to me at the Pond". Al-Tibi indicated that this is like the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying about Surat al-Baqarah and Al Imran: "They will argue on behalf of their companion", meaning they will take bodily form.
