Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4626

It is narrated from Amir bin Sa'd that Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him): "What prevents you from reviling Ibn Abi Talib (Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him)?" He replied: "As long as I remember the three things that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said in his favour, I will never revile him; any single one of those (virtues) would be dearer to me than a wealth of red camels." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "O Abu Ishaq! What are they?" He said: "I will not speak ill of him as long as I remember the time when revelation came down and he (peace and blessings be upon him) covered Sayyiduna Ali, his two sons and Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with them) beneath his cloak, and then supplicated: 'Rabbi inna ha'ula'i ahlu bayti' (O my Lord! These are my family, my Ahl al-Bayt). Likewise, I will not speak ill of him as long as I remember the occasion of the expedition of Tabuk, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left him behind (in Madinah), and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (O Messenger of Allah!) Have you left me behind with the children and the women? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Are you not pleased that your position with me is the same as that of Harun (peace be upon him) with Musa (peace be upon him), except that there is no prophethood after me?' And I will not speak ill of him as long as I remember the day of Khaybar, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I will give this banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah will grant victory at his hands.' So all of us began hoping for the attention of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: 'Where is Ali?' The Companions said: His eyes are sore (he has an eye inflammation). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Call him.' When he was called, he (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his blessed saliva to his eyes and handed him the banner, and then Allah granted victory at his hands." The narrator says: So, by Allah! Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) did not say a single word about him until he departed from Madinah.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but they did not record it with this wording (sequence of words), while the two Shaykhs agreed on recording the hadith of brotherhood (al-Mu'akhat) and the hadith of the banner.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The text recorded is that established from (S) and (M), whereas (Z) and (B) have "fi wajhihi" (in his face), and (Z) alone has "fa-basaqa" (with sin in place of sad); both forms (with sad and with sin) are used in the language.

Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih, and its chain is "jayyid" from the side of Abu Bakr al-Hanafi (Abd al-Kabir bin Abd al-Majid).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is because of Bukayr bin Mismar, who is saduq and there is no harm in him. In the other chain, Muhammad bin Sinan al-Qazzaz, although he has been criticised, is corroborated. This narration is also reported from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas through other routes, and the virtues of Ali mentioned in it also have supporting reports.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8385) narrated it from Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, from Abu Bakr al-Hanafi, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (3/ 1608), Muslim (2404/ 32), al-Tirmidhi (3724) and al-Nasa'i (8342) narrated it via the route of Hatim bin Isma'il, from Bukayr bin Mismar.
Details of the narration: In the narration of all of them except al-Nasa'i, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) covered Ali, Fatimah and their two sons with the cloth after the revelation of the verse of Mubahalah, whereas in al-Nasa'i it was after the revelation of the verse of al-Ahzab (innama yuridu Allahu li-yudhhiba ankumu al-rijsa ahla al-bayti wa-yutahhirakum tathira) [Allah only wishes to remove impurity from you, O people of the House, and to purify you thoroughly]. This agrees with the narrations of the Companions who narrated this story, and it will be mentioned at the hadith of Ibn Abbas (4702).
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8458) narrated something similar via the route of Abu Najih al-Makki: that Mu'awiyah mentioned Ali, and Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas said … and he mentioned something similar.
Details of the narration: Except that in place of the first story he mentioned Sa'd's statement: "That I had been his (the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him)) son-in-law through his daughter, and had from her the children that Ali has, is dearer to me than having everything on which the sun rises."
Grading: There is no harm in its narrators, but it is evidently mursal.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (121) and al-Nasa'i (8343) narrated it via the route of Abd al-Rahman bin Sabit, from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah, but Ibn Ma'in stated firmly that Ibn Sabit did not hear from Sa'd. In this narration, in place of the first story, is the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying to Ali: "Whoever I am the mawla of, Ali is his mawla." And at its beginning it states that Mu'awiyah disparaged Ali, and Sa'd answered him by mentioning these virtues of Ali.
Reference / Source: The hadith of brotherhood (al-mu'akhah) was narrated separately by Ahmad (3/ 1463, 1490, 1505, 1583, 1600), al-Bukhari (3706, 4416), Muslim (2404), Ibn Majah (115), al-Tirmidhi (3731) and al-Nasa'i (8082-8086, 8375-8384, 8386-8392) through several routes from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas. The first story will come separately with the author (al-Hakim) at (4759) via the route of Ali bin Thabit al-Jazari, and at (4770) via the route of Hatim bin Isma'il, both from Bukayr bin Mismar.
Note / Clarification: It will also come with a different wording at (4651) via the route of Khaythamah bin Abd al-Rahman from Sa'd.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8423) narrated via the route of Abu Bakr bin Khalid bin Urfutah, who said: I saw Sa'd bin Malik (Ibn Abi Waqqas) in Madinah, and he said: "It has been mentioned that you people revile Ali?" I said: "We have done so." He said: "Perhaps you too reviled him?" I said: "Allah forbid!" He said: "Do not revile him, for even if a saw were placed on the parting of my head to make me revile Ali, I would not revile him, after what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Grading: Al-Hafiz considered its chain strong in "Fath al-Bari" (11/ 144).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The three stories mentioned in the author's narration are supported by the hadith of Ibn Abbas (4702); see its supporting reports there.
Note / Clarification: In the narration of Bukayr bin Mismar, "sabb" (reviling) means criticising Ali bin Abi Talib and disparaging him, not verbal abuse, as the aforementioned narration of Ibn Sabit makes clear.

Note / Clarification: (1) That is, the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying to Ali: "Are you not pleased to be to me as Harun was to Musa?"

Reference / Source: (2) Both (al-Bukhari and Muslim) agreed on the hadith of the banner from the narration of Sahl bin Sa'd and Salamah bin al-Akwa'. Al-Bukhari (2942) and Muslim (2406) narrated it from Sahl bin Sa'd, and al-Bukhari (2975) and Muslim (2407) from Salamah bin al-Akwa'.
