It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a thousand dinars when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was equipping the Army of Hardship (Jaysh al-Usrah), and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) poured those dinars into the lap of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began turning those dinars over and saying repeatedly: "Whatever Uthman does after this day will not harm him."
The chain of this hadith is sahih, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its chain is hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because of Kathir, the mawla of Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah (Kathir bin Abi Kathir), and Abdullah bin al-Qasim who narrates from him. Reference / Source: Ahmad (34/ 20630) narrated it from Harun bin Ma'ruf, and al-Tirmidhi (3701) via the route of al-Hasan bin Waqi' al-Ramli, both from Damrah bin Rabi'ah, with this same chain. Al-Tirmidhi said: "It is hasan gharib." Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith has several supporting reports, the best of which is the mursal narration of al-Hasan al-Basri in Imam Ahmad's "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (no. 787), and its narrators are thiqah. Grading: This narration is more correct than what al-Tirmidhi (3700) narrated via the route of Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, and Abdullah bin Ahmad in his additions to "al-Musnad" (27/ 16696) via the route of Abd al-Samad bin Abd al-Warith. Both of them narrate from al-Sakan bin al-Mughirah, from al-Walid bin Abi Hisham, from Farqad Abu Talhah, from Abd al-Rahman bin Khabbab, who said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) urging [people to equip] the Army of Hardship (the army of the Tabuk expedition). Uthman bin Affan stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I pledge a hundred camels with their saddle-cloths and saddles in the way of Allah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) urged [them] to equip the army, and Uthman stood up again and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I pledge two hundred camels with their saddle-cloths and saddles in the way of Allah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) urged [them] again, and Uthman stood up again and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I pledge three hundred camels with their saddle-cloths and saddles in the way of Allah." Then I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) coming down from the pulpit, saying: "Nothing Uthman does after this will be held against him; nothing Uthman does after this will be held against him." Imam al-Tirmidhi said: "This hadith is gharib from this route." Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: Farqad Abu Talhah is majhul; no one but al-Walid narrated from him, and Ali bin al-Madini said: "I do not know him."
