It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tonight a righteous man was shown in a dream that Abu Bakr was joined to the Messenger of Allah, Umar was joined to Abu Bakr, and Uthman was attached to Umar." (Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) When we got up from the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we said among ourselves that the "righteous man" is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself, and as for the mention of their being joined one to another, it means that these are the ones who will be the guardians of this matter of the caliphate with which Allah sent His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Imam al-Darimi says: I heard Yahya bin Ma'in say that Muhammad bin Harb narrates this hadith with a connected chain (musnad), whereas others narrate it from Imam al-Zuhri as mursal; and (in the chain) this is Umar bin Aban, because none of the sons of Aban bin Uthman was named Amr.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(3423). Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts this name is corrupted into "Abdullah", and a mark of doubt (tadbib) was placed over it in (Z); we corrected it from the biographical sources on this person. The name has already occurred correctly with the author (al-Hakim) in the chain of another hadith, number (3423).
Note / Clarification: (3) This nisbah occurs with kasrah on the jim in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (10/ 667) in the biography of Yazid bin Abd Rabbih, whereas in "Ansab al-Sam'ani" and the works based on it, it is explicitly recorded with dammah on the jim. The most likely view is that the vocalisation of "al-Siyar" (with kasrah) is more correct, because it is a nisbah to a church in Hims near which Yazid lived. Apparently this church was named after the prophet known as "Jirjis" (with kasrah on the jim), as vocalised in "al-Qamus" and its commentary.
Grading: (4) Its chain may possibly be graded hasan, as explained at number (4488); there this hadith passed via the route of Musa bin Harun al-Burdi from Muhammad bin Harb. Reference / Source: Ahmad (23/ 14821) narrated it from Yazid bin Abd Rabbih with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: (5) Discussion of the disagreement over its chain has already passed at number (4488), and that al-Daraqutni preferred the muttasil version.
6/ 220. Note / Clarification: (6) Ibn Ma'in stated firmly that Aban had no son called "Amr", although the genealogy books mention that among Aban's sons were both Umar and Amr. See "Jamharat Ansab al-Arab" of Ibn Hazm (page 85). Al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (6/ 315) and Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa-l-Ta'dil" (6/ 220) mentioned him among those named Amr.
