Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4599

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The millstone of Islam will turn (in the whirlpool of tribulations) after thirty-five, thirty-six or thirty-seven years. If they perish, it will be the path of those who perished; and if their religion remains for them, it will stand for seventy years." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Is this period counted from the years that have passed or from those that remain?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather from those that remain."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, and in it is a clear statement about the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), as I mentioned earlier that the date of his martyrdom is the year 35 AH.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih, and this chain may possibly be graded hasan because of al-Bara' bin Najiyah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bara' bin Najiyah is a senior Tabi'i; a senior Tabi'i narrated from him, al-Ijli declared him thiqah, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared him thiqah in "al-Taqrib". Al-Baladhuri mentioned him in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (11/ 203), stating that he narrated from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). This report has also been narrated through another route from Abdullah (bin Mas'ud).
Note / Clarification: Sharik is Ibn Abdullah al-Nakha'i, Mansur is Ibn al-Mu'tamir, and Abu Nu'aym is al-Fadl bin Dukayn.
Note / Clarification: It will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at (4644) via the route of Sufyan al-Thawri, and at (8802) via the route of Shayban bin Abd al-Rahman, both from Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (6/ 3707) and Ibn Hibban (6664) narrated it via the route of al-Qasim bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud, from his father, from his grandfather.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over whether Abd al-Rahman heard from his father; the preponderant view is that he did. In this narration the words "at the head of 35 (years)" occur without any doubt, and the statement of Umar at its end is not mentioned.
Important point: Imam Ahmad counted this hadith among the most firmly established reports narrated about the caliphate of Ali (as al-Khallal quoted in "al-Sunnah" 649), and [held] that the reckoning begins from the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so that the caliphate of Ali bin Abi Talib also falls within the stated period.
Details of the narration: This report has a third route with Ishaq bin Rahwayh (al-Matalib al-Aliyah: 4335), al-Bazzar (1942), al-Tahawi (Sharh Mushkil al-Athar: 1612) and al-Tabarani (10311), from Sharik bin Abdullah al-Nakha'i, from Mujalid bin Sa'id, from al-Sha'bi, from Masruq, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Grading: Its chain is not strong because of Mujalid, but it is fit for corroboration.
Details of the narration: The wording of al-Tahawi is the most complete: "The mill of Islam will cease after 35 (years); if they make peace among themselves without fighting, they will enjoy the world in ease for 70 years, and if they fight one another, they will follow the ways of those before them."
Details of the narration: Its fourth route is with al-Tabarani (9159) from Abu al-Ahwas, from Ibn Mas'ud, mawquf (with a sahih chain). Although it is mawquf, the other narrations indicate that it is marfu', and something like this cannot be said on the basis of opinion at all. Its wording is: "The mill of Islam will turn at the head of thirty-five; then a great event will occur. If their destruction lies in it, that is to be expected; otherwise it will be extended for them for seventy years. Whoever lives to see that will see what he disapproves of."
