Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The text between the brackets was not present in the manuscripts; we have established it from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".
Grading: This narration is sahih li-ghayrihi (authentic due to supporting evidence), and this chain is "hasan" in the context of corroborating chains and supporting reports, because of Umar, the freed slave of Ghufrah (Umar bin Abd Allah al-Madani).
Note / Clarification: Muhammad bin al-Sabbah is al-Jarjara'i, and Muhammad bin Ka'b is al-Qurazi.
Reference / Source: Ibn Adi recorded it in "al-Kamil" (5/36), Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 541) and Ibn Asakir (42/428), through several routes from Muhammad bin al-Sabbah, with this chain.
Details of the narration: From it, Umar's statement "If I appoint a successor, then (one better than me) did appoint a successor", to the end, was recorded by al-Bukhari (7218) via Urwah bin al-Zubayr, and al-Tirmidhi (2225) via Salim bin Abd Allah bin Umar. Both of them narrate from Abd Allah bin Umar that it was said to Umar: Will you not appoint a successor? He said: If I appoint a successor, (and so on).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His statement "If they were to entrust it (the caliphate) to the little bald one (al-usayli')", without the part about appointing a successor, is supported by the report of Amr bin Maymun al-Awdi from Umar. This narration is found with Abd al-Razzaq (9761), Ibn Sa'd (3/316), al-Baladhuri (2/353 and elsewhere), al-Harith bin Abi Usamah ("Bughyat al-Bahith" 594), Ibn Battah (8/253), al-Lalaka'i (2653), Abu Nu'aym (4/151), Ibn Abd al-Barr (pp. 477-478) and Ibn Asakir (42/427-428), and its chain is sahih. But there the wording is: "If they entrust it to the one with the receding hairline (al-ajlah), he will lead them on the right path", and in some of its routes it is clarified that this means Ali bin Abi Talib.
