Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4575

It is narrated from al-Sha'bi that Atikah bint Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl, lamenting Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), said: "O my eye, pour forth tears abundantly and weep bitterly; do not be slack (in weeping) over the firm Imam. Death has grieved me with the loss of the horseman who was the foremost warrior on the day of battle and assault. He was the refuge of the religion and a helper against the hardships of time, and like a rain of mercy for the destitute and the distressed. Tell the people of hardship and poverty to die now, for death has made Umar drink the cup of sha'ub (death)." Atikah (may Allah be pleased with her) also said: "Fayruz (Abu Lu'lu'ah), may Allah grant him no good, has grieved me over that fair-complexioned man who recited the Book of Allah abundantly and turned to Allah in repentance. He was most kind to those close to him and stern with the enemies, a trustworthy and noble brother in times of calamity. Whenever he said something, his deed did not belie his word; he hastened towards good deeds, and there was never a frown on his face."
Imam al-Hakim said: The hadith of the story of the Shura is found in the two Sahihs, but here I have mentioned some narrations whose chains are authentic and which contain useful and rare information.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts the word is "'ayni" (with "eye" annexed to the first-person ya'), but the metre of the verse is only correct with what we have established from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".

Note / Clarification: A change has occurred in the first foot of this verse, because it is in the "tawil" metre, whose first foot is originally on the pattern "fa'ulun". The "fa" and the "nun" were dropped from it, leaving the pattern "'ul". (In prosody) dropping the "fa" is called "thalm" and dropping the "nun" is called "qabd". Both have come together in this verse, and this is common in Arabic poetry. See Ibn Jinni's "al-'Arud" (p. 62).

Grading: There is no harm in its narrators, but it is mursal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because al-Sha'bi (Amir bin Sharahil) did not live at the time of the death of Umar bin al-Khattab.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tarikh" (4/218-219) via Salih bin Kaysan, from al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah, and besides being weak in the chain up to Salih bin Kaysan, it is also munqati' (broken). The opening verses were recorded by al-Khara'iti in "I'tilal al-Qulub" (439) and Abu al-Faraj al-Asfahani in "al-Aghani" (18/64-66) through several routes, but all of them are either mursal or mu'dal.
