Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4574

It is narrated from Malik bin Dinar; he said: When Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, the voice of an unseen caller was heard from the mountain of Tabalah: "Let whoever would weep, weep over Islam, for the people are close to ruin though (Umar's) era has not yet grown old. The world has turned its back and its good has departed, and the one who had certainty in Allah's promise has grown weary of it." The people looked around but saw nothing.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts it was written "Ja'far bin Sulayman and Malik bin Dinar" with a conjunction, which is an error; we corrected it from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (5068).

Note / Clarification: In the narration, the vowel of the rhyme letter (rawi, the final letter of the verse) differs from the vowel in the previous verse, and (in prosody) this is called "iqwa'".

Grading: There is no harm in its narrators (la ba'sa bihim), but it is mursal and may be mu'dal, because Malik bin Dinar did not live in the time of Umar.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir recorded it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (44/480) via Hammad bin Waqid, from Malik bin Dinar.
Note / Clarification: "Tabalah" is the name of a town near "Bishah" in the south of the Arabian Peninsula.
