It is narrated from Abu Salamah, Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib and others that when Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was wounded, he said to his son Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Go to Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), convey my greetings of peace to her and say: Umar says that if it causes you no harm and you do not feel it straitens your space, then I wish to be buried beside my two companions (the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq); but if it harms you or you feel it straitens you, then by my life, in this Baqi' are buried Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Mothers of the Believers who are better than Umar." When the messenger reached her, she said: "Indeed, it will cause me no harm and no straitening." Then he said: "Then bury me with the two of them."

Grading: This report is sahih, and there is no harm in the narrators of this chain, but it is mursal. Technical note / Defect ('illah): For Abu Salamah and Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib did not witness this story (being of a later time). Details of the narration: This report has also been narrated through two other sahih routes: Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (1392, 3700) recorded something similar via Amr bin Maymun al-Awdi, who said: I saw Umar bin al-Khattab; he said: O Abd Allah bin Umar, go to the Mother of the Believers A'ishah and say; and then he mentioned it similarly. Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari also recorded it (7328) via Urwah: that Umar sent (a message) to A'ishah; and he mentioned it in abridged form. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari" (24/124): Its form is that of irsal, because Urwah did not live at the time when Umar sent to A'ishah; but it is understood that he received it from A'ishah, so it is connected (mawsul).
