Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4563

It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab (may Allah have mercy on him) that when Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) returned from Mina on the occasion of his last Hajj, he made his camel kneel at al-Batha', then made a heap of pebbles, spread one end of his cloak over it and reclined, then he raised his hands towards the sky and supplicated: 'Allahumma kabirat sinni, wa da'ufat quwwati, wa intasharat ra'iyyati, fa-qbidni ilayka ghayra mudayyi'in wa la mufarrit' (O Allah, my age has advanced, my strength has weakened and (the responsibilities of) my subjects have spread wide; so take me to Yourself in a state in which I am neither one who has neglected (rights) nor one who has fallen short). Then he came to Madinah in the month of Dhu al-Hijjah and addressed the people in a sermon, saying: "O people, the Sunnahs have been made clear for you, the obligations have been laid down for you, and I have left you upon a bright highway." And striking one of his hands on the other (for emphasis), he said: "Beware! Do not let yourselves lead the people off to the right and the left." The month of Dhu al-Hijjah had not yet ended when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred.

Grading: This is a mursal narration with a sahih chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The mursal narrations of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib are counted among the most authentic and strongest of mursal reports; indeed, because of Sa'id's eminence, Abu Hatim al-Razi included his mursal narrations from Umar under the ruling of musnad (connected) reports (figuratively).
Note / Clarification: Al-Humaydi is Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr al-Asadi, Sufyan is Ibn Uyaynah, and Yahya bin Sa'id is Ibn Qays al-Ansari.
