It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: The people with the soundest insight and perception are three: the first is the Aziz of Egypt, when he used his perception about Yusuf (peace be upon him) and said to his wife: "Keep him in honour" [Surah Yusuf: 21]; the second is the woman who saw Musa (peace be upon him) and said to her father: "O my father, hire him" [Surah al-Qasas: 26]; and the third is Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), when he nominated Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) as his successor (Khalifah).
Imam al-Hakim said: May Allah Almighty be pleased with Ibn Mas'ud; how excellently he has brought these (three incidents) together with this authentic chain. (A brief account of the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).)

Grading: This report is sahih, and the narrators of this chain are trustworthy. Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Abu Ubaydah here narrates it from his father Abd Allah (bin Mas'ud), although he did not hear from him; however, he is not alone in it, for Abu al-Ahwas Awf bin Malik also narrated it from Ibn Mas'ud, as has passed under no. (3360), and its chain is sahih. Note / Clarification: Abu Ishaq is al-Sabi'i, and Zuhayr is Ibn Mu'awiyah. Reference / Source: Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi recorded it in "Musnad Ibn al-Ja'd" (2555), al-Khara'iti in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (964), al-Lalaka'i in "Sharh Usul I'tiqad" (2524, 2525), al-Wahidi in "al-Tafsir al-Wasit" (2/605) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (44/255), through several routes from Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, with this chain. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (12/176) and Ibn Asakir (44/254-255) via Isra'il bin Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from his grandfather, in the same way.
