Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4542

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) struck him on the chest with his blessed hand three times, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: 'Allahumma akhrij ma fi sadrihi min ghillin wa abdilhu imanan' ((O Allah,) remove whatever rancour (or harshness) is in his chest and replace it with faith). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said these words three times.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) with a sound (mustaqim) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is weak because of Khalid bin Abi Bakr bin Ubayd Allah al-Umari.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): For he has munkar (unfamiliar) reports, as al-Dhahabi stated in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", and this is the wording of al-Bukhari. Al-Daraqutni said: He is not strong. Abu Hatim said: His hadith is written down (we say: that is, for consideration in corroborating chains and supporting reports, but he was not corroborated in this hadith of his). Ibn Hibban, despite mentioning him in "al-Thiqat", said: He makes mistakes. Imam Ahmad also expressed surprise at Khalid narrating it from Salim (who is Salim bin Abd Allah bin Umar) directly, as in "Muntakhab 'Ilal al-Khallal" (104).
Note / Clarification: Al-Nufayli (mentioned in the chain) is Abu Ja'far Abd Allah bin Muhammad al-Harrani.
Reference / Source: Al-Khallal recorded it in his "al-'Ilal", as in Ibn Qudamah's "al-Muntakhab" (104); al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (13191) and "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (1096); Ibn al-Muqri' in his "Mu'jam" (1244); Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (58); and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (44/38), through several routes from Abu Ja'far al-Nufayli, with this chain.
