حدثني أبو سعيد أحمد بن يعقوب الثَّقَفي، حدثنا عمر بن حفص السَّدُوسي، حدثنا عاصم بن علي، حدثنا المَسعُودي عن القاسم بن عبد الرحمن، عن أبيه، عن عبد الله، قال: والله ما استطعنا أن نصلِّيَ عند الكعبة ظاهِرينَ حتى أسلمَ عمرُ (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: By Allah, we were not able to pray openly at the Ka'bah until Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam.
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) خبر صحيح، وهذا إسناد لا بأس برجاله، لكن عاصم بن علي - وهو الواسطي - سماعهُ من المسعودي - وهو عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله بن عُتبة، بعد تَغيُّره، وقد روى هذا الخبرَ عنه أبو نُعيم الفضل بن دُكين ووكيع بن الجراح، وهما ممَّن سمع من المسعودي قبل تغيُّره، فلم يذكُرا عبد الرحمن والد القاسم وهو ابن عبد الله بن مسعود، وكذلك لم يذكره غيرهما ممن روى هذا الخبرَ عن المسعودي، وكذلك رواه مِسعَر بن كدام عن القاسم عن ابن مسعود، فهو المحفوظ، وإذ قد ثبت ذلك فإنَّ القاسم لم يُدرك جدَّه عبدَ الله بن مسعود، لكن روي ذلك عن ابن مسعود من وجه آخر صحيح، وسيأتي بمعناه أيضًا عند المصنف برقم (4540) بإسناد صحيح.
Grading: This report is "sahih", and there is no harm in the narrators of this chain, but Asim bin Ali's (al-Wasiti) hearing from "al-Mas'udi" (Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah bin Utbah) was after his ikhtilat (deterioration of memory).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This report was also narrated from al-Mas'udi by Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn and Waki' bin al-Jarrah, both of whom heard from al-Mas'udi before his deterioration, and they did not mention (in this chain) al-Qasim's father "Abd al-Rahman" (bin Abd Allah bin Mas'ud). Likewise, al-Mas'udi's other students did not mention him. Mis'ar bin Kidam also narrated it via al-Qasim > Ibn Mas'ud, so this is what is "mahfuz" (preserved). Once this is established (that Abd al-Rahman is not in between), al-Qasim did not meet his grandfather Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (i.e. the chain is disconnected). However, this narration is reported from Ibn Mas'ud through another "sahih" chain, and with the same meaning it will come with the author under no. (4540) with a sahih chain.
وأخرجه يونس بن بكير في زياداته على "السيرة النبوية" لابن إسحاق (229)، وأخرجه الآجري في "الشريعة" (1207) و (1352) من طريق يزيد بن هارون، والطبراني في "الكبير" (8806) من طريق أبي نعيم الفضل بن دُكَين، وأبو بكر الكلاباذي في "معاني الأخبار" ص 284، وابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 44/ 47 من طريق وكيع بن الجراح، وأبو بكر القَطِيعي في زياداته على "فضائل "الصحابة" لأحمد بن حنبل (482)، وابن عساكر 44/ 47 من طريق علي بن الجعد، خمستهم (يونس بن بكير ويزيد بن هارون وأبو نُعيم ووكيع وعلي بن الجعد) عن المسعودي، عن القاسم قال: قال عبد الله بن مسعود. لم يذكروا فيه عبد الرحمن والد القاسم.

All five of these narrators (Yunus, Yazid, Abu Nu'aym, Waki', Ali bin al-Ja'd) narrate it via al-Mas'udi > al-Qasim > Ibn Mas'ud, and they did not mention al-Qasim's father Abd al-Rahman (in the chain).
