Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4536

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: 'Allahumma a'izz al-Islama bi-Umar ibn al-Khattab aw bi-Abi Jahl ibn Hisham' (O Allah, grant Islam dominance through Umar bin al-Khattab or Abu Jahl bin Hisham). So Allah Almighty accepted the supplication of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in favour of Umar; thus Allah laid the foundation of the dominion of Islam through him, and through him He brought down the idols.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak) due to the weakness of Mujalid (bin Sa'id), but this hadith is also narrated from people other than Ibn Mas'ud, as explained at hadith no. (4534). It is also narrated from Ibn Mas'ud through another chain, with wording like the hadith of Ibn Abbas and A'ishah.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (10314) and Abu Nu'aym in "Tathbit al-Imamah" (78) via Muhammad bin al-Abbas al-Asbahani > Umar bin Muhammad al-Asadi with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (7/4362) and others narrated it through several routes via al-Mas'udi > Abu Nahshal > Abu Wa'il > Ibn Mas'ud, with the same meaning as the previous hadith of Ibn Abbas and A'ishah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Qasim bin Yazid al-Jarmi was alone in narrating it from al-Mas'udi (al-Tabarani, al-Awsat: 8253) in mentioning "al-Qasim bin Abd al-Rahman" in place of "Abu Nahshal", which is a mistake. And the aforementioned Abu Nahshal is "majhul" (unknown).
