! It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib that when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) dispatched the armies towards Sham (Syria), among them Yazid bin Abi Sufyan, Amr bin al-As and Shurahbil bin Hasanah, he walked on foot with them as far as Thaniyyat al-Wada'. They said: "O Successor of the Messenger of Allah, you are walking while we are riding?!"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: This report is "sahih". All the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy), but it is "mursal", as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is one of the mursal reports of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, and his mursal reports are considered among the strongest. Moreover, a group of the Successors also narrated it as mursal with chains to them that are acceptable. Here "Yunus" refers to Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (9/85), and via him Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (2/76), with the chain Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak > Yunus bin Yazid.
Details of the narration: It contains the addition that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I seek reward from Allah for these steps of mine (that I am walking with you) in the path of Allah." It also mentions several instructions that Abu Bakr gave to the army.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded it in "al-Musannaf" (5/344) via Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, who narrates it from Qays bin Abi Hazim "or someone else".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): If it is established with certainty that it is narrated from Qays bin Abi Hazim, the chain is "sahih", because Qays lived in the time of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and heard from him, since he is a "mukhadram" Successor.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (9/90) narrated it via Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said: Salih bin Kaysan narrated to me; and he mentioned it as "mursal".
Grading: Its chain is "hasan", and its wording is close to that of Ibn al-Mubarak's narration from Yunus.
Details of the narration: The incident of al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) walking while the army rode (without the address "O caliph of the Messenger") is also narrated in the following books: Malik in "al-Muwatta'" (2/447), Abd al-Razzaq in "al-Musannaf" (9375), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (22/607) and al-Bayhaqi (9/89). All of these are narrated as "mursal" through two routes from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, and its chain up to Yahya is sahih. It mentions Abu Bakr's (may Allah be pleased with him) instructions when seeing the army off and his hope of reward for walking.
