Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, but this chain is "extremely feeble" (wahin bi-marrah) because of Hafs bin Umar al-Ubulli; he is matruk (abandoned), and some called him a liar.
Important point: However, this hadith is also narrated through other routes. From Mis'ar it was also narrated by Abu Yahya Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani (which will come next), and by Waki' bin al-Jarrah and Sufyan bin Uyaynah (nos. 4502, 4504); so the hadith is sahih.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Husayn bin al-Muhtadi (Mashyakhah: 48) recorded it via Uthman bin Ahmad al-Daqqaq > Muhammad bin Sulayman bin al-Harith with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir recorded it in "Tarikh Dimashq" 33/114 via al-Haytham bin Khalid bin Yazid al-Baghdadi > Hafs bin Umar al-Ubulli with this same chain.
Details of the narration: Besides Mis'ar, another group also narrated it from Abd al-Malik bin Umayr, as in the following hadiths with the author.
Reference / Source: Among them is also Za'idah bin Qudamah (Ahmad 23245, al-Tirmidhi 3662, al-Tahawi 1226-1229, and others). But most of them limited themselves to the command to follow Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them).
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan". Likewise Ibn Abd al-Barr (Jami' Bayan al-Ilm 2306), al-Dhahabi (Tarikh al-Islam 2/138) and Ibn Hajar (Muwafaqat al-Khubr al-Khabar 1/143) graded it hasan. Al-Jawzaqani (al-Abatil 141) called it "sahih". And al-Uqayli (al-Du'afa' 3/504) said: Its chain is "good and established".
Note / Clarification: The narration of Za'idah bin Qudamah will also be mentioned at (no. 4503).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Malik bin Umayr is not alone in narrating this hadith; Salim Abu al-Ala' al-Muradi also narrated it in full: Amr bin Harim > Rib'i > Hudhayfah (Ahmad 23386, al-Tirmidhi 3663, Ibn Hibban 6902). Salim al-Muradi is disputed, and the most balanced view is that of Abu Hatim al-Razi, that "his hadith is to be written" (i.e. for consideration). Since he has been corroborated, his hadith is "hasan" in corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of al-Irbad bin Sariyah, which has passed with the author (no. 333 and after), with the wording: "Hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me; bite onto it with your molar teeth." This hadith is "sahih".
Note / Clarification: His words "Ihtadu bi-hadyi Ammar": that is, follow the way of Ammar.
Note / Clarification: And his words "wa tamassaku bi-ahdi Ibn Umm Abd": that is, Ibn Mas'ud; meaning whatever he advises and enjoins upon you.
