It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, how can there be any betterment after this verse: 'Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it' [Surah al-Nisa': 123]? Will we be punished for every evil deed we do?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr" (he said this three times). "O Abu Bakr, do you not fall ill? Do you not grieve? Do you not suffer fatigue and hardship? Do you not meet with afflictions?" I said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These are the (hardships) by which you are recompensed (for evil deeds) in this world."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is "sahih" by virtue of its routes; although the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy), it is "munqati'" (disconnected). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Bakr bin Abi Zuhayr did not meet Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, and in the narration of Ahmad (68) he explicitly stated that he did not hear it (saying: "I was informed that Abu Bakr said"). However, it is narrated from Abu Bakr through other routes, all of which have some criticism, but together they make the hadith sahih. Moreover, it has supporting reports from people other than Abu Bakr. Reference / Source: Ahmad 1/(68-71) and Ibn Hibban (2910, 2926) recorded it through various routes from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid with this same chain. Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3039) recorded it via Rawh bin Ubadah > Musa bin Ubaydah > the mawla of Ibn Siba' > Abd Allah bin Umar > Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, and called it "gharib". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Musa bin Ubaydah is weak and the mawla of Ibn Siba' is majhul (unknown). We say: Rawh stated with certainty (al-Khatib: Mudih Awham 1/150) that the mawla of Ibn Siba' is "Ata' bin Ya'qub", and Ali bin al-Madini also held this with certainty. If this is correct, then only the weakness of Musa bin Ubaydah remains, because Ata' bin Ya'qub is thiqah (and it is said that he saw the Prophet). Details of the narration: Its third route is narrated in al-Tabari (5/294) and al-Khatib (2/574-575) via Zayd bin al-Hubab > Abd al-Malik bin al-Hasan al-Harithi > Muhammad bin Zayd bin al-Muhajir > A'ishah > Abu Bakr. Its narrators are thiqah; if Muhammad bin Zayd's hearing from A'ishah is established, the chain is strong. Details of the narration: The fourth route is narrated in Sa'id bin Mansur (700) and al-Tabari (5/295) via Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir > al-A'mash > Muslim bin Subayh (that Abu Bakr said …). Its narrators are thiqah, but it is mursal. (6476). Note / Clarification: The fifth route is weak and will come with the author (under no. 6476). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (Ahmad 8027, al-Bukhari 5642, Muslim 2573, the author 1297, 1298) with various wordings, all of which carry the meaning of Abu Bakr's hadith. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also narrated from A'ishah (Ahmad 24114, 24368, al-Bukhari 5640, Muslim 2572) with various wordings carrying the meaning of Abu Bakr's hadith.
