Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4498

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, those who lower their voices in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for piety" [Surah al-Hujurat: 3], Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I made it binding upon myself that I would speak to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) only the way one speaks a secret (in a very low voice).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "Muhammad", whereas he is Abd Allah bin Yahya (bin Mu'awiyah bin Ishaq bin Talhah bin Ubayd Allah) al-Talhi. Abu Nu'aym (al-Mustakhraj ala Sahih Muslim 322) named him the same way. He is a teacher of Abu Nu'aym, al-Daraqutni, al-Hakim and others. He has a biography in al-Dhahabi's "Tarikh al-Islam" (8/149), and al-Bayhaqi narrated one narration from him in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (486) via Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim. There is no narrator named Abd Allah bin Muhammad al-Talhi, so we are certain that this is a corruption.

Grading: Its chain is "very weak" because of Husayn bin Umar al-Ahmasi; he is wahin (feeble) (as al-Dhahabi said in al-Talkhis).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mukhariq: he is al-Ahmasi. Tariq: he is Ibn Shihab.
