Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4488

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Last night a righteous man was shown in a dream that Abu Bakr was joined to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Umar was joined to Abu Bakr, and Uthman was joined to Umar." Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When we got up from the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we said: The "righteous man" is the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself, and the mention of their being joined to one another indicates that they will be the governors of this matter (the caliphate) with which Allah sent His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
The last part of this hadith has an authentic chain from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain can possibly be graded hasan among corroborating chains and supporting reports (it may be hasan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Amr bin Aban bin 'Uthman: al-Zuhri and 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Ali bin Abi Rafi' ('Abadil) narrated from him; Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat and declared this hadith of his sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There has been disagreement over al-Zuhri in its chain. Al-Zubaydi (Muhammad bin al-Walid) narrated it from him just as it is in the author's chain here (and as will come at no. 4601). Ahmad 23/ (14821), Abu Dawud (4636) and Ibn Hibban (6913) recorded it via routes from Muhammad bin Harb with this same chain. Al-Daraqutni (al-'Ilal: 3258) said: It seems that al-Zubaydi preserved its chain accurately.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli (from whom 'Abd Allah bin Wahb narrates, al-Bayhaqi: al-Dala'il 6/ 348) contradicted him. He narrated it via al-Zuhri > Jabir as mursal. And he mentioned that Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah corroborated him in this.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak narrated it via Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli > al-Zuhri, who said: "Someone who heard Jabir bin 'Abd Allah narrated to me." Nu'aym bin Hammad recorded it in "al-Fitan" (262) from Ibn al-Mubarak.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its meaning is supported (shahid) by the hadith of Abu Bakrah that passed earlier (at no. 4486).
Note / Clarification: His words "nita": it means "was hung" or "was joined". "Al-nawt" means hanging.
