It is narrated from Sayyiduna Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had prayed the Fajr prayer, he would ask: "Has any of you seen a dream last night?" One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the Fajr prayer, then turned to his Companions and asked: "Which of you has seen a dream?" A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I saw as if a balance was lowered from the sky. You were placed in one pan and Abu Bakr in the other pan, and your side outweighed Abu Bakr. Then you were lifted away and Abu Bakr remained in his place. Then Umar bin al-Khattab was brought and placed in the other pan, and Abu Bakr's side outweighed Umar. Then Abu Bakr was lifted away and Umar remained in his place. Then Uthman bin Affan was brought and placed in the other pan, and Umar's side outweighed Uthman. Then both of them were lifted away, and the balance was lifted away too." The narrator said: (On hearing this) the colour of the blessed face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The caliphate of prophethood will last thirty years; after that there will be kingship." Sa'id bin Jumhan said: Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Count (these years): two years of Abu Bakr, ten years of Umar, twelve years of Uthman and six years of Ali (may Allah be pleased with them all).
This dream has also been narrated with an authentic chain as a marfu' report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Grading: The marfu' part at its end and the statement of Safinah after it are "hasan". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mu'ammal bin Isma'il had a poor memory (sayyi' al-hifz), and he was mistaken in this hadith in mentioning the story of the dream in it. The students of Hammad bin Salamah did not mention the dream in the hadith of Safinah, nor did anyone other than Hammad (among those who narrated it from Sa'id bin Juhman) mention the dream. In our view, the source of Mu'ammal's mistake is that Hammad bin Salamah narrated this story of the dream via 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an > 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakrah > his father (as passed in the previous hadith), and Mu'ammal is among those who also narrated the hadith of Abu Bakrah from Hammad bin Salamah (as in al-Bayhaqi: al-Dala'il 6/ 342). Apparently, as Mu'ammal's memory was poor, the hadith of Abu Bakrah got mixed into the hadith of Safinah, so he put the story of the dream into the hadith of Safinah, whereas it belongs to the hadith of Abu Bakrah. Despite this, al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared this chain of Mu'ammal hasan in "Mukhtasar Zawa'id al-Bazzar" (1234), and al-Busiri declared it sahih in "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" (4151/ 3), but neither of them was correct. And Allah the Exalted knows best. Sa'id bin Juhman is "hasan al-hadith". Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (3829) and al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi (Nawadir al-Usul: 486) recorded it via Rizq Allah bin Musa al-Naji > Mu'ammal bin Isma'il with this same chain. Reference / Source: The marfu' part at its end, together with the statement of Safinah, was recorded by Ahmad 36/ (21919) from Bahz bin Asad and 'Abd al-Samad bin 'Abd al-Warith, and at (21923) from Zayd bin al-Hubab, and by Ibn Hibban (6943) via 'Ali bin al-Ja'd. All of them narrate it from Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain. Reference / Source: This same portion of it was also recorded by Ahmad (21928) and al-Tirmidhi (2226) via Hashraj bin Nubatah, and by Abu Dawud (4647) and al-Nasa'i (8099) via al-'Awwam bin Hawshab; both of them narrate it from Sa'id bin Juhman with this same chain. Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is hasan. Note / Clarification: It will also come shortly with the author (at no. 4748) via 'Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id > Sa'id bin Juhman.
