It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Has any of you seen a dream?" A man said: "I saw as if a balance came down from the sky. You and Abu Bakr were weighed, and your side outweighed Abu Bakr. Then Abu Bakr and Umar were weighed, and Abu Bakr's side outweighed. Then Umar and Uthman were weighed, and Umar's side outweighed. Then that balance was raised up." (On hearing this) we saw signs of displeasure on the blessed face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. Its supporting narration (shahid) is the narration of Sa'id bin Jumhan, which he transmitted from Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hasan's (Ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Basri) hearing from Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is sound, and al-Bukhari used his hadiths as proof (ihtijaj). Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4634), al-Tirmidhi (2287) and al-Nasa'i (8080) recorded it via two routes from Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah al-Ansari with this same chain. Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan". (8389). Note / Clarification: It will be repeated shortly (at no. 8389). Reference / Source: Ahmad 34/ (20445) and Abu Dawud (4635) recorded it via Hammad bin Salamah > 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an > 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakrah > his father. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In it there is an addition that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will be a caliphate (on the pattern) of prophethood, then Allah will give kingship to whomever He wills." 'Ali bin Zayd is weak. Note / Clarification: And see the (narration) after it.
