Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4484

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, if only you would appoint a successor (khalifah) over us." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I appoint a successor over you and you disobey him, punishment will descend." The people said: "What if you were to appoint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) as successor?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I appoint him as your successor, you will find him strong in the matter of Allah and physically frail." The people said: "What if you were to appoint Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as successor?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will not do so; but if you do make him successor, you will find him rightly guided and a guide to others, who will lead you along the Straight Path." This Uthman bin Umayr is Abu al-Yaqzan.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (S), (M) and ('A) it is "in istakhlaftu" (if I appoint a successor).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the printed edition there is an addition after this: "their request that 'Umar be appointed as caliph over them". And this is also in the narration of others besides the author.

Grading: With this wording its chain is "very weak".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is agreement on the weakness of 'Uthman bin 'Umayr Abu al-Yaqzan, and he caused inconsistency (idtirab) in the chain of this report and was also mistaken in its text, since he inserted one hadith into another. In fact this report of his consists of two hadiths: (1) the first hadith, in which the Companions asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to appoint a successor, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) answered them about how grave disobeying the successor would be if one were appointed; (2) the second hadith, in which the Companions asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to appoint Abu Bakr, 'Umar or 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with them) as successor.
Details of the narration: As for the first hadith, Abu al-Yaqzan narrated it once via Zadhan Abu 'Umar > Hudhayfah, and another time via Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah > Hudhayfah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the second hadith, Abu al-Yaqzan narrated it via Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah > Hudhayfah, and he was mistaken in it, because this second hadith actually belongs to Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i > Zayd bin Yuthay', as has passed in the previous hadith.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sharik bin 'Abd Allah (al-Nakha'i) took all of this from Abu al-Yaqzan, and Sharik had a poor memory. But the mistake and inconsistency in this hadith come from Abu al-Yaqzan, not from Sharik. The evidence for this is that in one of his narrations of this report (Ibn 'Adi: al-Kamil 4/ 16), Sharik combined the narration of Abu al-Yaqzan with the narration of Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i > Zayd bin Yuthay'. Further evidence is that Sharik also has a separate narration of the second hadith via Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i > Zayd bin Yuthay' > Hudhayfah, as will be explained (at no. 4737).
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (2895) recorded it in full via Yahya bin al-Yaman, Ibn 'Adi (al-Kamil 4/ 16) via al-Nadr bin 'Arabi, and Abu Bakr al-Kalabadhi (Ma'ani al-Akhbar p. 279) via Yahya bin 'Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani. All three (Yahya bin al-Yaman, al-Nadr and Yahya al-Himmani) narrate it from Sharik with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Adi also recorded it in 4/ 16 via another route: al-Nadr bin 'Arabi > Sharik al-Nakha'i > Abu al-Yaqzan 'Isa bin Kathir > Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration Abu al-Yaqzan's name is given as "'Isa bin Kathir", and the intermediary between him and Hudhayfah has been dropped!! Both of these are wrong.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Adi also recorded it by this same route via Sharik al-Nakha'i > Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i > Zayd bin Yuthay' as mursal.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir (Tarikh Dimashq 12/ 271) recorded the first hadith of it via Muhammad bin Harun al-Ruyani > al-'Abbas bin Muhammad. But he added in it: "But whatever Ibn Mas'ud teaches you to recite, recite it; and whatever Hudhayfah narrates to you, accept it."
Reference / Source: Likewise Ibn Abi Khaythamah recorded it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (third volume: 4443) via Yahya bin 'Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani and Yahya bin al-Yaman; both of them narrate it from Sharik with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (Musnad: 442) also recorded it, and via him al-Khatib (al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq: 109) and Ibn 'Asakir (12/ 271-272). And al-Tirmidhi (3812) via Ishaq bin 'Isa bin al-Tabba'. Both of them (al-Tayalisi and Ibn al-Tabba') narrated it via Sharik al-Nakha'i > Abu al-Yaqzan > Zadhan > Hudhayfah. Thus they mentioned "Zadhan" in place of Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah. Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is hasan, and it is the hadith of Sharik.
Reference / Source: And Abu Nu'aym (Hilyat al-Awliya' 1/ 64, Fada'il al-Khulafa' 232, Ma'rifat al-Sahabah 189) recorded the second hadith of it via Abu Husayn Muhammad bin al-Husayn al-Wadi'i > Yahya bin 'Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani > Sharik > Abu al-Yaqzan > Abu Wa'il > Hudhayfah. And see the (narration) before it.
