It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you make Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) your leader, you will find him detached from this world and eager for the Hereafter. If you make Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) your leader, you will find him strong and trustworthy, one who will not care about the blame of any blamer in the matter of Allah. And if you make Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) your leader, you will find him rightly guided and a guide to others, who will lead you along the (right) path."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. It has a supporting narration (shahid): the hadith of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
4/ 569. Grading: It is "da'if" because of its inconsistency (idtirab). Technical note / Defect ('illah): There has been disagreement over Abu Ishaq in it in several ways, which shows that the narrator did not retain it accurately. Abu Ishaq ('Amr bin 'Abd Allah al-Sabi'i) deteriorated (in memory) at the end of his life. Zayd bin Yuthay' is one of those from whom only Abu Ishaq narrates, and his hadith in general can be graded hasan if a supporting report exists, but here he is alone. Despite this, Ibn al-Jazari (Manaqib al-Asad al-Ghalib 37) declared its chain sahih and Ibn Hajar (al-Isabah 4/ 569) declared it jayyid (good). Reference / Source: Ahmad 2/ (859) recorded it via Isra'il > his grandfather Abu Ishaq with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Likewise Sufyan al-Thawri narrated it from Abu Ishaq (as will come at no. 4737), but he said: from Zayd bin Yuthay' > Hudhayfah. Thus he mentioned Hudhayfah in place of 'Ali. Some added Sharik al-Nakha'i between Sufyan and Abu Ishaq; Sharik had a poor memory, but he can be considered for corroboration. Note / Clarification: Discussion of this route will come there. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni (al-'Ilal 368) mentioned that Yunus bin Abi Ishaq and Jamil al-Khayyat also narrated it from Abu Ishaq and made it part of the Musnad of 'Ali. Whereas in another narration from Yunus bin Abi Ishaq, Salman al-Farisi is mentioned in place of 'Ali and Hudhayfah. Important point: Then al-Daraqutni mentioned another, mursal narration of Isra'il via his grandfather > Zayd bin Yuthay', in which neither 'Ali nor Hudhayfah is mentioned, and said: "The mursal version is closer to what is correct." Reference / Source: Sharik al-Nakha'i also narrated it from Abu Ishaq as mursal, as will be explained in the next hadith.
