It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was taken by night to al-Masjid al-Aqsa (the event of the Mi'raj took place), in the morning the people began talking about it. Thereupon some of those who had believed in him and affirmed him (peace and blessings be upon him) apostatised, and they hurried to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Do you know anything about your companion? He claims that he was taken by night to Bayt al-Maqdis last night. He asked: "Did he really say that?" The people said: Yes. He said: "If he said that, then he has certainly spoken the truth." The people asked (in astonishment): Do you affirm that he went to Bayt al-Maqdis in one night and came back before morning? He said: "Yes, I affirm him in matters (of faith) far more remote than that: I affirm the news of the heavens, the revelation that comes to him morning and evening." For this reason Abu Bakr came to be named "al-Siddiq".

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: As a connected (mawsul) report, its chain is "da'if" because of Muhammad bin Kathir al-San'ani, who is "layyin al-hadith" (soft, i.e. weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Narrators more trustworthy than him contradicted him and narrated the hadith as "mursal", and that is the "mahfuz" (preserved) version. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 2/ 360 from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. Reference / Source: Abu al-Qasim bin Bishran (Amali 560), and via him Ibn 'Asakir (30/ 55), recorded it from 'Abd al-Baqi bin Qani', and Diya' al-Maqdisi (Fada'il Bayt al-Maqdis 53) via 'Abd Allah bin Ishaq; both of them from Ibrahim bin al-Haytham al-Baladi. Al-Lalaka'i (1430) recorded it via Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli; al-Bayhaqi (al-Dala'il 2/ 360) and al-Diya' (53) via Abu al-Ahwas Muhammad bin al-Haytham; and Abu Nu'aym (69), al-Wahidi (3/ 96), Ibn al-Athir (3/ 206) and Ibn 'Asakir (30/ 55) via al-Mufaddal bin Ghassan al-Ghalabi. All three of these (narrators) narrate it from Muhammad bin Kathir al-San'ani with this same chain. Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq recorded it in his "Musannaf" (9719) and "Tafsir" (1/ 380) via Ma'mar > al-Zuhri as mursal. Technical note / Defect ('illah): He did not mention 'A'ishah or 'Urwah in his chain. Reference / Source: But al-Ajurri (al-Shari'ah 1030, 1259) recorded it via Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Malik bin Zanjawayh > 'Abd al-Razzaq > Ma'mar > al-Zuhri, in his hadith from 'Urwah, so he did mention 'Urwah. And Ibn Zanjawayh is a trustworthy hafiz. Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli (al-Zuhriyyat, as cited in Taghliq al-Ta'liq 4/ 240) recorded it via the nephew of al-Zuhri; al-Tabari (Tafsir 15/ 6, Tahdhib al-Athar 1/ 412) and Abu al-Hasan al-Khila'i (304) via Yunus bin Yazid; and al-Bayhaqi (al-Dala'il 2/ 359) via Salih bin Kaysan. All three narrate it from al-Zuhri > Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman as mursal. Important point: It is not unlikely that al-Zuhri took this report from both 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr and Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman, since he narrated widely, and his shaykhs in sirah and maghazi were eminent Tabi'is and scholars of Madinah (such as Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Abd Allah, 'Urwah and Abu Salamah). Their mursal reports are strong because of their eminence. Here two of them ('Urwah and Abu Salamah) narrated this report as mursal, so they strengthen one another. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Besides this, the hadith is also narrated as "marfu'" from Anas bin Malik (in the Tafsir of Ibn Abi Hatim, as cited in Tafsir Ibn Kathir 5/ 11-13), but its chain is weak. So in this story reliance is on the two mursal reports mentioned above. Note / Clarification: This hadith will be repeated shortly (at no. 4507) via Abu 'Amr bin al-Sammak > Ibrahim bin al-Haytham al-Baladi.
