It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I washed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I looked for the signs that usually appear on the body of a deceased person (such as change or unpleasantness), but I saw nothing of the kind. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was most pure and fragrant in life and after death as well.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Grading: Its narrators are trustworthy (thiqah), but there is disagreement over whether it is connected (mawsul) or mursal. The correct view is that it is "mursal", as explained in detail earlier (at no. 1355). There it was narrated via 'Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad > Ma'mar > al-Zuhri > Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, that 'Ali bin Abi Talib said… Important point: Even though it is established as mursal, it counts among "the strongest of the mursal reports", because Sa'id bin al-Musayyab is a Tabi'i of great standing.
