Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4439

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, the angels came and offered condolences to his household. They could hear the voice but could not see anyone. They said: "O People of the Household, peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Indeed, with Allah there is consolation for every calamity and a replacement for everything that is lost. So place your trust in Allah alone and place your hope in Him alone, for the truly deprived one is he who is deprived of the reward. Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings."
This hadith has an authentic chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. This al-Makhzumi is not Khalid bin Isma'il al-Kufi; rather, he is Hisham bin Isma'il al-San'ani, who is trustworthy and reliable.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "very weak", because Abd Allah bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Murta'id al-San'ani is unknown (majhul) and his shaykh Abu al-Walid al-Makhzumi is unknown.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Hibban, in "al-Thiqat" 9/ 243, gave Abu al-Walid's name as "Hashim bin Ibrahim" and stated that he narrates from Anas bin Iyad (Abu Damrah). He (Abu al-Walid) is not Khalid bin Isma'il bin al-Walid, who is "matruk al-hadith", as Ibn Nasir al-Din in "Jami' al-Athar" 6/ 480 and Ibn Hajar in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" 4/ 357 and others asserted (him to be), because Khalid bin Isma'il is of the same generation as Anas bin Iyad and shares a number of shaykhs with him. As for the author (al-Hakim), after this report he gave his name as "Hisham bin Isma'il al-San'ani", but we could not find a biography of any narrator by this name, and the author is alone in declaring him trustworthy!
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd, in his "al-Tabaqat" 2/ 226 and 239, narrated this report directly from Anas bin Iyad, who said: They narrated to us from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father; and he mentioned it as "mursal".
Important point: And this is what is reliable in the narration of Anas bin Iyad: that he did not hear it (directly) from Ja'far bin Muhammad, and that there is no mention of Jabir bin Abd Allah in it. Rather, Muhammad (al-Baqir) narrates it as mursal. So what is "preserved" in the narration of Anas bin Iyad is that it is munqati' and mursal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Moreover, in this hadith there is disagreement over it from Ja'far bin Muhammad in several ways:
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) Muhammad bin Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Ali al-Hashimi narrated it from his father, from his grandfather, from Ali bin al-Husayn, from Ali bin Abi Talib. Thus he made it a narration of Ali bin al-Husayn (Zayn al-Abidin) from his grandfather Ali bin Abi Talib.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Umar al-Adani in the "Musnad" ("al-Matalib al-Aliyah": 4326/ 1), Ibn Abi al-Dunya ("al-Hawatif": 8), Hamzah bin Yusuf al-Sahmi ("Tarikh Jurjan": p. 362), Abu Nu'aym ("Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 508) and Ibn Hajar ("al-Isabah": 2/ 314) narrated it through this route.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But there is criticism of Muhammad bin Ja'far, and Ali bin al-Husayn did not live in the time of his grandfather Ali bin Abi Talib (it is munqati'). Al-Sahmi, on p. 363, in another route, made it connected by mentioning al-Husayn bin Ali bin Abi Talib, but it is apparent that this is a mistake.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) Al-Shafi'i narrated it in "al-Umm" 2/ 634-635 from al-Qasim bin Abd Allah bin Umar bin Hafs, from Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Ali, from his father, from Ali bin al-Husayn, as mursal. Thus he made it a mursal narration of Ali bin al-Husayn.
Reference / Source: By way of al-Shafi'i, al-Muzani narrated it in "al-Sunan al-Ma'thurah an al-Shafi'i" (390); al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (4/ 6), "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (7/ 267, 268), "Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar" (7759) and "al-Da'awat al-Kabir" (644); Abu Muhammad al-Baghawi in "al-Anwar fi Shama'il al-Nabi al-Mukhtar" (1221); and Ibn Hajar in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" (4/ 356).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But this al-Qasim is "matruk al-hadith"; indeed, Imam Ahmad accused him of lying.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) Abd Allah bin Maymun al-Qaddah narrated it from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, from Ali bin al-Husayn, from his father al-Husayn bin Ali. Thus he made it connected by mentioning al-Husayn bin Ali.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (2890) and "al-Du'a'" (1220).
Grading: But Abd Allah bin Maymun al-Qaddah is "dhahib al-hadith" (extremely weak). (4) And Ali bin Abi Ali al-Lahabi al-Hashimi narrated it from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said... Thus he too made it connected by mentioning Ali. Ibn Abi Hatim narrated it in his "Tafsir" (3/ 832, 9/ 3076). But Ali bin Abi Ali al-Lahabi is also "matruk al-hadith", and Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir did not live in the time of his father's grandfather Ali bin Abi Talib.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (5) Likewise, al-Waqidi (Ibn Sa'd 2/ 227) narrated it from a man, from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, from Ali. Al-Waqidi is weak, and his shaykh is unnamed (unknown).
Important point: In summary, no chain of this report from Ja'far bin Muhammad is established as sahih. Despite this, al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" 7/ 268 strengthened it by combining this route of the author with the route of al-Qasim bin Abd Allah bin Umar, and said: "Although these two chains are weak, each is reinforced by the other, and they show that it has a basis from the hadith of Jabir!!" Al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said this, whereas the reality behind the multiplicity of these routes is the disagreement arising from the weakness of the narrators who transmitted it from Ja'far; so it is "idtirab" (inconsistency) in the chain of the hadith, not a (genuine) multiplicity of routes.
Details of the narration: Someone other than Ja'far bin Muhammad also narrated this report. Thus al-Hafiz Muhammad bin Muslim bin Warah ("Jami' al-Athar": 6/ 440) narrated it from al-Minhal bin Bahr al-Qushayri, from Abd al-Wahid bin Sulayman, from al-Hasan bin Ali (a man from the people of Madinah), from Muhammad bin Ali, from Ali bin Abi Talib.
Reference / Source: Likewise, Muhammad bin Yahya al-Azdi narrated it in al-Ajurri's "al-Shari'ah" (1113, 1841), but he said: from al-Muthanna bin Bahr al-Qushayri, from Abd al-Wahid bin Sulayman, from al-Hasan bin al-Hasan bin Ali, from his father, from Ali bin Abi Talib.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He gave Ibn Bahr's name as "al-Muthanna", whereas he is "al-Minhal" (as Ibn Warah said). And he gave the name of Abd al-Wahid's shaykh as "al-Hasan bin al-Hasan bin Ali" and said "from his father", which created the impression that he is al-Hasan bin Ali bin Abi Talib. But what Ibn Warah said is correct, and Muhammad bin Yahya al-Azdi did not preserve it accurately.
Reference / Source: Sayyar bin Hatim narrated it in al-Bayhaqi ("al-Dala'il": 7/ 210) from Abd al-Wahid bin Sulayman al-Harithi, from al-Hasan bin Ali, from Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir, as mursal. Thus he agreed with Ibn Warah, except that he made the report mursal and did not mention (the Companion) Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: In any case, this "al-Hasan bin Ali al-Madani" is unknown (majhul). Abu Zur'ah ("al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 3/ 20) said: I do not know him. Moreover, even if the mention of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in it were accepted as correct, it is munqati', because Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir did not meet him.
Important point: The more likely view is that it is a mursal narration of Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir, as indicated by Ibn Sa'd's narration from Anas bin Iyad (which has passed). And Allah knows best.
Details of the narration: This report is also narrated from Ali bin Abi Talib through another route (Ibn Abi al-Dunya, "al-Hawatif" 9), but its chain contains matruk and unknown narrators.
Note / Clarification: In this chapter there is a narration from Anas bin Malik, which will come after it in the author's collection.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And there is a narration from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) in al-Baladhuri's "Ansab al-Ashraf" 1/ 564. Its chain contains al-Waqidi, who is weak, and we could not identify al-Walid bin Salih, who narrates from him.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And there is a "mursal" narration from Abu Hazim al-Madani (Ibn Sa'd 2/ 252, "al-Hawatif" 10). The one narrating from him is Salih bin Bashir al-Murri, who is weak.
Note / Clarification: Caution: In most of the routes mentioned and in the supporting reports it came that the one who offered condolence was al-Khidr (peace be upon him), not the angels. This is why al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar mentioned its routes in "al-Isabah" in the biography of al-Khidr. This is another disagreement in this report which necessitates its weakness and munkar status.
