Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The name of the narrator "al-Hakam" (who is Ibn Utaybah) has dropped out of the manuscripts, although his name is undoubtedly established in the narration. Thus Ibn Majah mentioned him in his narration from al-Qasim bin Muhammad bin Abbad. A further proof is that no narration at all of Ibn Abi Layla (Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman) from Miqsam is known except through the intermediary of "al-Hakam". And Allah is the One who grants success.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih" through the route of Sufyan (al-Thawri), from Ja'far (Ibn Muhammad bin Ali bin al-Husayn bin Ali bin Abi Talib / Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although there is some criticism of the narrator Abu Bakr bin Abi Darim, he has been corroborated.
Important point: However, the correct wording of this hadith is: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed three Hajjs: two Hajjs before the Hijrah, and one Hajj after emigrating from Madinah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A defect has been alleged against this hadith that does not affect a narration like it (i.e., it is not damaging), as was explained at hadith number (1744).
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3076) narrated it from al-Qasim bin Muhammad bin Abbad with this same chain and with the wording referred to.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (815) narrated it by way of Zayd bin al-Hubab, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Ja'far bin Muhammad, with this same chain, in these words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed three Hajjs: two Hajjs before the Hijrah, and one Hajj after the Hijrah together with which there was also an Umrah (Hajj al-Qiran). He (peace and blessings be upon him) took 63 sacrificial camels with him, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came from Yemen with the rest of the animals. Among them was a camel of Abu Jahl with a ring (burah) in its nose. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered them and ordered that a piece of meat be taken from each camel; then it was cooked, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) drank from its broth."
Reference / Source: Ahmad 3/ (2079) and Ibn Majah (3100) narrated it in abridged form (only mentioning, among the sacrificial animals, the camel that had a ring in its nose) by way of Waki' bin al-Jarrah, and Ahmad (4/ 2428) by way of Mu'ammal bin Isma'il. Both of them (Waki' and Mu'ammal) narrate it from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Ibn Abi Layla, with this same chain. And it mentions that the camel belonged to Abu Jahl.
Reference / Source: This narration, to this extent, has passed at hadith number (1734) by way of Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas, and it has this addition: "In order to enrage the polytheists by it (by sacrificing Abu Jahl's camel)."
Reference / Source: Ahmad 5/ (2880) narrated it by way of Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, from Ibn Abi Layla, in these words: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered 100 camels during the Hajj; he slaughtered 60 of them with his own hand and gave orders concerning the rest, so they were slaughtered too. Then a piece of meat was taken from each camel and gathered in a pot; he ate from it and drank its broth. And on the day of al-Hudaybiyah he slaughtered 70 animals, among which was the camel of Abu Jahl; when they were prevented from (reaching) the House, they yearned (groaned) as they yearn for their young."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration something is mentioned which gives the impression that Abu Jahl's camel was slaughtered on the day of al-Hudaybiyah, whereas this contradicts the "well-known and sahih" narrations.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From it, the mention of the sacrificial animals which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) slaughtered was narrated by the following hadith scholars: Ahmad 22/ (14549) from Muhammad bin Maymun al-Za'farani; Muslim (1218), Abu Dawud (1905), Ibn Majah (3074) and Ibn Hibban (3944 and 4018) by way of Hatim bin Isma'il; Muslim (1218) by way of Hafs bin Ghiyath; al-Nasa'i (4105) by way of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan, (4125) by way of Isma'il bin Ja'far, and (4126 and 6657) by way of Yazid bin al-Had; and Ibn Hibban (3943) by way of Wuhayb bin Khalid. All seven of these narrators narrate it from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). The narration of Hatim bin Isma'il mentions the Hajj of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at length.
Reference / Source: This narration, mentioning the Hajjs of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), has passed in abridged form (number 1744) by way of Zayd bin al-Hubab, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, from Jabir.
Important point: It had this addition: "And after the Hijrah he performed one Hajj with which he combined an Umrah (performed qiran)." This addition is sahih; it came in the long narration of Hatim bin Isma'il from Ja'far bin Muhammad.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which has passed earlier (number 4420), also indicates the soundness of this addition.
