Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4421

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Tabuk, people began to lag behind. The Companions would say: "O Messenger of Allah! So-and-so has stayed behind." He (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "Leave him. If there is any good in him, Allah will bring him to join you; and if it is otherwise, Allah has relieved you of him." Until it was said: "O Messenger of Allah! Abu Dharr has stayed behind; his camel has slowed him down." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him. If there is any good in him, Allah will bring him to join you; and if it is otherwise, Allah has relieved you of him." Meanwhile Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) waited a little for his camel, but it remained slow. When he was getting delayed, he took up his belongings, loaded them on his back and set off on foot following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had halted at a certain place when an onlooker saw him and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Here is a man walking along the road." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would that it were Abu Dharr!" When the people looked carefully, they exclaimed: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, it is indeed Abu Dharr!" Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah have mercy on Abu Dharr. He walks alone, he will die alone, and he will be raised alone." Then time passed, and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) was moved to al-Rabadhah. When his death approached, he instructed his wife and his slave: "When I die, wash me, shroud me, then carry me and place me at the edge of the highway, and say to the first caravan that passes by you: 'This is Abu Dharr.'" When he died, they did so. Suddenly a caravan appeared, and they did not notice until their mounts had nearly reached the bier. In that caravan, with a group of the people of Kufah, was Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). They asked: "What is this?" They were told that it was the funeral of Abu Dharr. At this Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) burst into tears and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke the truth: "May Allah have mercy on Abu Dharr. He walks alone, he will die alone, and he will be raised alone." Then he dismounted and took charge of his burial himself until he had buried him. When they reached Madinah, the words of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud and his burial (of Abu Dharr) were mentioned before the Commander of the Believers Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word was altered (corrupted) into "Yazid", while in manuscripts (S), (M) and ('A) it was written without dots, which is also a corruption.

Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of Buraydah bin Sufyan and because of "irsal" (a missing link).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Kathir, surprisingly, called it hasan in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (7/ 159).
Important point: The story of the death of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) is transmitted from Umm Dharr with a better chain, which takes precedence over Buraydah's narration. Ibn al-Qayyim, in "Zad al-Ma'ad" (3/ 534), criticised Buraydah's narration and preferred the narration of Umm Dharr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared this narration defective because of "irsal", since Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi's hearing from Ibn Mas'ud is not established (he was born around 40 AH, while Ibn Mas'ud had died before that).
Reference / Source: The narrations of Jarir bin Hazim, Salamah bin al-Fadl and al-Tabarani (1621) indicate this irsal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Confining oneself to irsal alone is open to question, because the condition of Buraydah bin Sufyan is also weak, and he is alone in the wording of this story and contradicts others.
Note / Clarification: Yunus bin Bukayr contradicted all the students of Ibn Ishaq by mixing together the stories of Tabuk and of (Abu Dharr's) death, whereas all the others narrate the two separately. In al-Samarqandi's "Tanbih al-Ghafilin" (941) it is mentioned with a chain, but he is alone in that.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 221) through al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Athir narrated it in "Usd al-Ghabah" (5/ 101) by way of Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani, from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar.
Reference / Source: The story of the death of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) (separate from the account of Tabuk) was narrated by these imams: Ibn Hisham in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" 2/ 524 through Ziyad bin Abd Allah al-Bakka'i; Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (4/ 220) by way of Ibrahim bin Sa'd; al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" 3/ 107 by way of Salamah bin al-Fadl al-Abrash; and Ishaq bin Rahawayh in his "Musnad", as in "al-Matalib al-Aliyah" (4074/ 1), and by his way Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 1/ 169, by way of Jarir bin Hazim. All four of these narrators (Ziyad, Ibrahim, Salamah and Jarir) narrate it from Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Salamah bin al-Fadl, narrating from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi, said: "When Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) exiled Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him)..." (then he mentioned the whole report). Likewise, Jarir bin Hazim said in his narration from al-Qurazi: "Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) went out to al-Rabadhah...".
Grading: In the narrations of both of them the "irsal" (a Successor narrating directly from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), or omitting the Companion in between) is quite clear, as has passed.
Reference / Source: Likewise, al-Tabarani narrated in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (1621), through Ahmad bin Abd Allah al-Barqi, from Ibn Hisham, from Ziyad al-Bakka'i, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi, that: "Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came..." (then he mentioned a brief part of the story).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration is clearer in its irsal (being mursal) than the narration in Ibn Hisham's "Sirah".
Details of the narration: The story of the death of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) will come later with a different wording in the author's (al-Hakim's) collection at hadith number (5559), as the narration of al-Ashtar al-Nakha'i from Umm Dharr (may Allah be pleased with her).
Important point: Ibn al-Qayyim strengthened this narration in "Zad al-Ma'ad", as mentioned earlier.
Note / Clarification: The word "talawwama" in the text means: he waited.
Note / Clarification: "Qari'at al-tariq" means the middle of the road, and according to one view its upper part.
Note / Clarification: "Al-raka'ib" means camels that are ridden or that carry some load.
