It is narrated from Abu Najih al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We besieged the fortress of Ta'if with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever shoots an arrow (at the enemy) will have a rank in Paradise." So that day I shot sixteen arrows. And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever shoots an arrow in the path of Allah, it is equal to freeing a slave; and whoever's hair turns white while in Islam, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection; and any man who frees a Muslim man, Allah Almighty will make every bone of him (the freed slave) a means of protecting every bone of him (the one who freed him) from the Fire; and any Muslim woman who frees a Muslim woman, Allah Almighty will make every bone of her (the freed woman) a means of protection from the Fire for every bone of her (the one who freed her)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) with a high ('ali) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: This word had dropped out of our manuscripts, but it is established in the printed editions and in al-Bayhaqi's narration (5/ 159) through al-Hakim, and it is also present with all the other narrators.
Grading: The hadith is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The chain is hasan because of Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad bin Mansur al-Harithi, and he has been corroborated. Here "Hisham" is Hisham bin Abi Abd Allah al-Dastuwa'i. Details of the narration: The mention of shooting arrows and an arrow reaching its target has passed at numbers (2500) and (2592) through two routes from Mu'adh bin Hisham. Reference / Source: The part on the virtue of freeing a slave was narrated by Abu Dawud (3965) by way of Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, from Mu'adh bin Hisham, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (32/ 19428) by way of Yahya bin Sa'id, and al-Nasa'i (4859) by way of Khalid bin al-Harith; both of them transmit it from Hisham al-Dastuwa'i with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (19429) by way of Sa'id bin Abi Arubah, from Qatadah, with this same chain.
