It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished with the conquest of Makkah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) headed for Hunayn. Meanwhile Malik bin Awf al-Nasri had gathered Banu Nasr, Jusham, Sa'd bin Bakr, some groups of Banu Hilal and people of Banu Amr bin Asim bin Awf, and the allies of the tribe of Thaqif and Banu Malik had also joined them in full force. Then he set out against the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), taking with him their wealth, women and children. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) received news of them, he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Hadrad al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Go and mingle with these people until you bring us certain news of them." He went and stayed there for a day or two, then came back and told him (peace and blessings be upon him) the situation. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Umar! Do you hear what Ibn Abi Hadrad is saying?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (in astonishment): "Ibn Abi Hadrad has lied." At this Ibn Abi Hadrad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If you are calling me a liar, then you have at times called a liar one (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) who is better than me." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Do you hear what Ibn Abi Hadrad is saying?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar! You were once astray, and then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, guided you." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to Safwan bin Umayyah and asked him for one hundred coats of armour along with the necessary war equipment that goes with them. He asked: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Are you taking this by force?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather it is a loan with a guarantee of return, 'ariyah madmunah (a guaranteed loan), until we return it to you." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out (with the army).
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: It is narrated like this in manuscript ('A) and in al-Bayhaqi's narration (5/ 121) through al-Hakim and another person with him, which agrees with the narration of Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar in Ibn al-Athir's "Usd al-Ghabah" (4/ 266). Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z), (M) and (B) this word changed to "wa-awda'at", and in manuscript (S) it became "wa-wada'at", while in manuscript (Z) a mark of oddity (a sign of doubt or strangeness) was placed over it.
Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets [ ] had dropped out of our manuscripts, and we have entered it from the printed editions. This text is established in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Dala'il" through al-Hakim, and without it the flow of the narration is broken.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): From the words "Umar said: Ibn Hadrad has lied" up to here, our manuscripts had these words in its place: "Umar said: O Ibn Abi Hadrad! Do you not hear what the Messenger of Allah is saying? Ibn Abi Hadrad said: O Umar! You were astray and Allah guided you". Important point: This clearly contradicts the printed editions. We preferred the printed text because it agrees with al-Bayhaqi's narration from al-Hakim, the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr in al-Dhahabi's "Tarikh al-Islam" (1/ 385), "Sirat Ibn Hisham" (2/ 440) and "Maghazi al-Waqidi" (3/ 893). According to this, the sentence "You were astray..." is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), not the saying of Ibn Abi Hadrad.
Grading: Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 119-121) and "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (6/ 89) through al-Hakim and Abu Bakr bin al-Hasan al-Qadi, from Abu al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub, with this same chain; however, in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" he did not quote the full wording. Reference / Source: Ibn al-Athir narrated it in "Usd al-Ghabah" (4/ 266) by way of Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani, from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar. (2332). Details of the narration: The part of this narration containing the story of borrowing (weapons) from Safwan bin Umayyah has already passed, from the hadith of Safwan himself and from the hadith of Ibn Abbas, at numbers (2331) and (2332).
