Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4402

It is narrated from Qays bin Abi Hazim that he said: I heard Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "On the day of the battle of Mu'tah, nine swords broke in my hand, and nothing remained in my hand except a single Yemeni blade."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. Moreover, the two Shaykhs agreed on the hadith of Humayd bin Hilal from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the battle of Mu'tah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Zayd bin Harithah took the banner and was martyred, then Ja'far took it and was also martyred, then Abdullah bin Rawahah took it and was also martyred." After that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) to Mu'tah.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Verification of the text: In the manuscripts this word was corrupted into "sab'ah" (seven), whereas it appears correctly in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (4/ 373), narrated from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, and that agrees with the other sources of this report.

Grading: This report is sahih, and its chain is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for this is Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar (al-Utaridi), and there is corroboration (mutaba'ah) for him.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated it (4265) by way of Sufyan al-Thawri and (4266) by way of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan; and Ibn Hibban (7089) by way of Sufyan bin Uyaynah. All three of them narrate it likewise from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid.
Note / Clarification: "Al-safihah": a broad sword.

Technical note / Istidrak: The two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not both narrate this hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him); rather, al-Bukhari (1246) alone narrated it.
