Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4403

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she asked the wife of Sayyiduna Salamah bin Hisham bin al-Mughirah: "Why is it that I do not see Salamah attending the prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Muslims?" She replied: "By Allah! He cannot go out (out of shame), because whenever he goes out, people call out to him: 'O you who fled! Did you run away from the path of Allah?' Because of this taunt he has become confined to his house and does not go out." It should be noted that he had taken part in the battle of Mu'tah with Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: There is no harm in its narrators (la ba'sa bihim), but there is a break in the chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Amir bin Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr did not hear this narration from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), as al-Hakim's narration here gives the impression. In fact, al-Hakim himself, in al-Bayhaqi's narration from him (in "al-Dala'il" 4/ 374), presented its chain in a more precise wording than here, where he said: "From Amir bin Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr that Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to the wife of Salamah bin Hisham..."
Details of the narration: The same came in the narration of Ibn al-A'rabi and Ridwan bin Ahmad (from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar), and this agrees with all the narrators who narrated it from Ibn Ishaq, because all of them mentioned that Amir narrates it from "some members of the family of al-Harith bin Hisham" that Umm Salamah said to the wife of Salamah bin Hisham.
Important point: This too contains no explicit statement that this unnamed man heard the report from Umm Salamah, so it contains "an unnamed narrator" and "irsal" (a missing link).
Reference / Source: Al-Waqidi narrated it in "al-Maghazi" (2/ 765) through Mus'ab bin Thabit, from Amir bin Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr, from Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith bin Hisham. If it is established that the unnamed man is "Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman", then he is a well-known thiqah narrator and is known for narrating from Umm Salamah; but in none of the routes of this report is there an explicit statement of Umm Salamah narrating it to Abu Bakr or anyone else; rather, all of its routes indicate "irsal". And Allah knows best what is correct.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (4/ 374) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Mandah narrated it likewise in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1/ 700) through Abu al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub.
Reference / Source: Ibn Mandah (1/ 700) narrated it from Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Ziyad bin al-A'rabi; and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (6/ 427) by way of Abu al-Husayn Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani; both of them narrate it likewise from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hisham narrated it in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (2/ 382) from Ziyad bin Abd Allah al-Bakka'i; al-Tabari in "Tarikhuh" (3/ 42) by way of Salamah bin al-Fadl al-Abrashi; and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3417) by way of Ibrahim bin Sa'd al-Zuhri.
Details of the narration: All three of them narrate from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Abd Allah bin Abi Bakr, from Amir bin Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr, from "some members of the family of al-Harith bin Hisham" (who were Amir's maternal uncles), that Umm Salamah said to the wife of Salamah bin Hisham...
