Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4401

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) fell unconscious, and his sister Amrah began to weep and to lament, listing his qualities: "Alas, my brother! Alas, you were such and such!" When he came to, he said: "For every quality you mentioned, I was questioned (by the angels): 'Are you really like that?'"
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Identification of the narrator: "Abthar" is Ibn al-Qasim, "Husayn" is Ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, and "al-Sha'bi" is Amir bin Sharahil.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (4268) narrated it from Qutaybah bin Sa'id, from Abthar bin al-Qasim, with this same chain. And he added: "So when he died, she (A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her)) did not weep over him."
Technical note / Istidrak: So al-Hakim's adding it as something (al-Bukhari and Muslim) missed is an oversight on his part.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (4267) also narrated it by way of Muhammad bin Fudayl, from Husayn, but without the addition mentioned.
Technical note / Variation in the chain: Sufyan bin Uyaynah (in Abd al-Razzaq 6697) contradicted Abthar and Ibn Fudayl, narrating it from Husayn, from al-Sha'bi "mursal"!!
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (3/ 490) narrated something similar as a "mursal" narration of Abu Imran al-Jawni, except that he mentions in it that the woman who wailed was his "mother", not his sister. Its narrators are thiqah.
Technical note / Verification of the text: But al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared the mention of "mother" a mistake in "al-Fath" (12/ 485) and said: "If his mother had been named Amrah, I would have considered it possible that this happened to both of them (mother and sister)."
