It is narrated from Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: On the day of Uhud I recited these rajaz verses: "We are the protectors of (the tribes of) Ghalib and Malik; we defend our blessed Messenger. Today on the battlefield we strike on his behalf blows like those struck on the necks of fat camels kneeling in their pen." Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the Battle of Uhud, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him): "Say something about Talhah." So Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him) composed these verses: "On the day of the mountain pass, Talhah stood by Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in solace, on a path that had become narrow and difficult for him. He shielded him from the spears with his hands, while under the shade of the swords his fingers became helpless and paralyzed. And he was the leader of all people except Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); he kept the mill of Islam established until it became fully firm."

Grading: (2) This chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The hadiths of Sulayman bin Ayyub al-Talhi which he narrates "from his father, from his grandfather, from Musa bin Talhah, from his father" form a copy (nuskhah) in which some narrators are "majhul" (unknown) and which contains some "manakir" (munkar narrations). Despite that, Ya'qub bin Shaybah said (as in al-Mizzi's "Tuhfat al-Ashraf" 5004): "In my view its hadiths are sahih!"

Note / Clarification: "al-Sifah": the sides/flanks. "al-Kum": camels with large humps; its singular is "akwam" (masculine) and "kawma'" (feminine): one says "ba'ir akwam" and "naqah kawma'".
Note / Clarification: "al-Mabarik" (with a fathah on the mim): the plural of "mabrak", meaning the place where camels kneel down.
Note / Clarification: "Asa Muhammadan": i.e. he shared with him and helped him. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was wounded, he (Talhah) defended him in his stead, warding off the thrusts and blows from him and fighting in front of him.
Note / Clarification: "al-Ashaji'": the plural of "al-ashja'"; in the hand and the foot it is the sinew stretched over the small bones (sulami) from the wrist to the bases of the fingers, on the back of the hand. Some said: it is the bone that connects the finger to the wrist.
Note / Clarification: "Raha al-Islam" (the millstone of Islam): a figurative expression for war; it is likened to a millstone that grinds grain, because of the loss of lives in it.
