It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "On the day of the Battle of Badr we had only two horses: one belonged to Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) and one to Sayyiduna al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), because Abu Thabit is Muhammad bin Ubaydullah al-Madini, Abu Sakhr is Humayd bin Ziyad, and Abu Mu'awiyah al-Bajali is Ammar al-Duhni, and all of these narrators are agreed upon, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This chain is da'if. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because there is an "inqita'" (break) between 'Ammar al-Duhni and Sa'id bin Jubayr; he did not hear anything from Sa'id. This narration has already appeared in a longer form at no. (2538). Important point / Preference: More authentic than this from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is what is narrated through another route in "Musnad Ahmad" (2/ 1023), that he said: "On the day of Badr there was no horseman among us except al-Miqdad." And its chain is sahih. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, the narration of Ibn 'Abbas from 'Ali has a shahid (supporting report) in the "mursal" narration of 'Abd Allah al-Bahi, which is found with Sa'id bin Yahya bin Sa'id al-Umawi from his father (see: al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah by Ibn Kathir 5/ 66), and in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (231) and Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (18/ 352-353) by way of Jami' Abu Salamah. Both of them (Yahya al-Umawi and Jami') narrate it from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, from al-Bahi. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the "mursal" narration of Yazid bin Ruman is also a shahid, which is in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (2/ 21). Details of the narration: However, he added in it mention of a third horse, which belonged to "Marthad bin Abi Marthad". Reference / Source: Likewise al-Waqidi also said this in his "al-Maghazi" (1/ 27), relating it from his shaykhs. And it will come later (no. 5048) from al-Waqidi that the name of Marthad's horse on the day of Badr was "al-Sabal". Details of the narration: And later (no. 5046) with the author (al-Hakim) will come the statement of 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr: "On the day of Badr there were two horses with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), one belonging to Marthad bin Abi Marthad and the other to al-Zubayr." He limited himself to the horses of al-Zubayr and Marthad and did not mention the horse of al-Miqdad. 1/ 612. Details of the narration: Whereas Ibn Ishaq mentioned that Marthad bin Abi Marthad, 'Ali and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to ride one camel in turns (i.e. he had no horse). That is what he said, as found in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" (1/ 612). Note / Clarification: This is also the view of al-Zuhri and Musa bin 'Uqbah, as found in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/ 101-106). And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Note / Criticism: (1) (Al-Hakim's statement that al-Bukhari and Muslim agree on them is not correct.) Rather, al-Bukhari did not narrate anything from 'Ammar al-Duhni or Abu Sakhr al-Madani in "al-Sahih"; he narrated only from Abu Sakhr alone in "al-Adab al-Mufrad". Moreover, Thabit al-Madani is among the narrators of al-Bukhari only, not of Muslim; so where did "agreement" upon them come from?!
