Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4343

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyidah Atikah bint Abd al-Muttalib saw a dream three nights before Damdam bin Amr al-Ghifari arrived in Makkah, which greatly alarmed her. She called her brother Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib and said: "O my brother! Last night I saw a dream from which I fear that some evil and calamity is about to befall your people." He asked: "What is it?" She said: "I saw a man come riding on a camel, and he stopped in the valley of al-Abtah and began to call out: 'O treacherous people! Set out within three days to the places of your deaths.' I saw that people gathered around him. Then his camel took him into the Sacred Mosque, and the people gathered there too. Then the camel appeared on the top of the Ka'bah, and he made the same call. Then he reached the summit of Mount Abu Qubays and called out the same again. Then he rolled a rock down from the summit of the mountain, which broke into pieces as it fell, and not a single house of Quraysh remained into which some piece of it did not enter." Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! This is indeed a significant dream; keep it hidden." Atikah said: "You too keep it secret, for if Quraysh come to know of it, they will harm us." Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) left from there and met his friend al-Walid bin Utbah, told him the dream and asked him to keep it secret, but al-Walid told his father, and thus the matter spread in Makkah. Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I went to the Ka'bah for tawaf and saw Abu Jahl talking about Atikah's dream with a few people of Quraysh. Seeing me, Abu Jahl said mockingly: "O Abu al-Fadl! When did this new prophetess appear in your family?" I asked: "What is the matter?" He said: "The dream that Atikah bint Abd al-Muttalib has seen. O Banu Abd al-Muttalib! Were you not content that your men should claim prophethood, that now your women too have become prophets? We will wait for these three days that Atikah mentioned; if it is true, well and good, otherwise we will write a document against you that you are the most lying household among the Arabs." Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Out of expediency I denied it and said that she had seen nothing. When evening came, the women of Banu Abd al-Muttalib came to me and said: "Did you tolerate the audacity of this wicked, vile man to speak such things about your men and women while you kept listening? Did your sense of honor not stir?" I said: "By Allah! You speak the truth; I made a mistake. Now if he says such a thing again, I will teach him a lesson." On the third day I went out with the intention of quarreling with Abu Jahl. I was just advancing towards him when suddenly he began running towards the door of the mosque. I said in my heart: "May Allah curse you, are you running away out of fear of me?" But the reality was that he had heard the voice of Damdam bin Amr, who was standing on his camel in al-Abtah calling out. He had turned his camel's saddle upside down, torn his shirt, and cut his camel's nose and ears, and he was screaming: "O people of Quraysh! The caravan is plundered! The caravan is plundered! Your wealth which was with Abu Sufyan has been attacked by Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions; come to the rescue!" This incident made him forget me. Then soon we set out for battle, and Quraysh had to face the very humiliation that had been foretold, in the form of the killing of their chiefs and the capture of their nobles. Upon this, Atikah bint Abd al-Muttalib composed these verses: "Did my dream not prove true? While a fugitive of the people, by confirming it, brings disgrace upon you. You said - and I was not lying - 'You lie,' whereas none denies the truth except one who is himself a liar." And the narrator mentioned a long story.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts it is written "أقبل ضمضم", which contains a "saqt" (an omission) and a "tahrif" (a corruption).

Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "فرس". The correct word was restored from the narration of al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il".

Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts the wording has been corrupted into "كانت في أسفل ثم ارفاضت". The correct wording is the one established from the narration of al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il". "ارفضّت" means: it broke into pieces and scattered.

Note / Clarification: (2) In our manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "غيرا" (with an added alif at its end), while it appears correctly in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (since he narrated it from al-Hakim). "al-ghayr" means change and alteration. So the meaning is as if to say: you had no alteration of what was said, nor any objection to the abuse and reproach we were exposed to.

Grading: (1) The chain of this report through the narration of 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr is hasan, but it is mursal.
Important point / Strengthening: Even though it is mursal, something similar has also been narrated as mursal reports of al-Zuhri and Musa bin 'Uqbah; so through the combination of all these mursal reports this report is strengthened.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is not sahih as a narration of Ibn 'Abbas, because Husayn bin 'Abd Allah (in this chain) is "da'if" (weak), and no one other than him narrated it with a connected chain from Ibn 'Abbas. It has also been narrated as a hadith of 'Atikah bint 'Abd al-Muttalib, but with a "wahi" (extremely weak) chain up to her, of the kind one cannot take any comfort in (it is unreliable). So the reliance for this report is on the mursal reports of 'Urwah, al-Zuhri and Musa bin 'Uqbah. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/ 29) from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim and Abu Sa'id Muhammad bin Musa bin al-Fadl, both of them from Abu al-'Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Athir narrated it in "Usd al-Ghabah" (6/ 185) by way of Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani, from Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Jabbar.
Reference / Source: It is in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" (1/ 607), which is his narration from Ziyad bin 'Abd Allah al-Bakka'i, from Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Details of the narration: Except that he said: "Someone whom I do not suspect informed me, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas; and Yazid bin Ruman from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr, both of whom said." He did not explicitly name (the narrator) Husayn.
Reference / Source: Likewise al-Baladhuri narrated it in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (4/ 26) and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7766) by way of Ibrahim bin Sa'd; and al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (2/ 428) by way of Salamah bin al-Fadl al-Abrash. Both of them narrate it from Ibn Ishaq (with this chain), and they too did not explicitly name Husayn.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (24/ 860) by way of Abu al-Aswad, from 'Urwah. Also, al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/ 101) by way of Musa bin 'Uqbah as "mursal", and by way of Musa bin 'Uqbah from al-Zuhri as "mursal".
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mutawwalat" (32) and in "al-Kabir" (24/ 859); Ibn Mandah in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1/ 936); and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7494), by way of 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Imran, from Muhammad bin 'Abd al-'Aziz, from Ibn Shihab, from Humayd bin 'Abd al-Rahman, from his mother Umm Kulthum bint 'Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt, from 'Atikah bint 'Abd al-Muttalib.
Grading: Ibn Mandah said: "It is gharib with this chain."
Grading: We say: rather, this chain is extremely wahi (utterly weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Imran (who is known as Ibn Abi Thabit) and his shaykh Muhammad bin 'Abd al-'Aziz (who is Ibn 'Umar bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf) are both "wahi" (very weak).
