It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood (mu'akhah) among his Companions. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came with tears flowing from his eyes and said: O Messenger of Allah! You have established brotherhood among all your Companions, but you have not established brotherhood between me and anyone. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali! You are my brother in this world and the Hereafter." Salim bin Abi Hafsah has also corroborated this narration from Jumay', with some addition in its wording.

Grading: (2) This chain is very weak (da'if jiddan). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hakim bin Jubayr is "talif" (ruined, utterly unreliable), and his shaykh Jumay' bin Umayr is "da'if" (weak). Although Hakim bin Jubayr has been corroborated by some corroborating narrations (mutaba'at), none of them carries any weight at all. One of them is the corroboration of "Salim bin Abi Hafsah", which comes with the author (al-Hakim) right after this; Salim himself is fine (la ba'sa bihi), but in the chain leading to him there is a narrator who is "wahin" (very weak) and "accused" (muttaham). In any case, the real issue is "Jumay' bin Umayr", who is weak. Note: However, al-Tirmidhi graded this hadith of his "hasan", and Ibn al-Jawzi in "Manaqib al-Asad al-Ghalib" (after no. 16) and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "Fath al-Bari" (11/517) inclined towards strengthening it on the basis of its supporting reports. Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi narrated it in "al-Jami'" (3720) through the route of Yusuf bin Musa al-Qattan from Ali bin Qadim, with this same chain. Details of the narration: Kathir al-Nawwa' Abu Isma'il also narrated it from Jumay' bin Umayr, found in Ibn Adi's "al-Kamil" (2/166) and elsewhere. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This Kathir (al-Nawwa') is "da'if" and "extreme" (ghali) in Shi'ism. Details of the narration: Likewise, Abu al-Jahhaf Dawud bin Abi Awf also narrated it from Jumay', found in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (13909). Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in Abu al-Jahhaf (la ba'sa bihi), but in the chain leading to him there are two "weak" narrators. (4635). Note / Clarification: And see the detail that will come later (no. 4635). Important point / Nakarah (oddity): Here, in this narration, the words "akhi fi al-dunya wa al-akhirah" (you are my brother in this world and the Hereafter) are munkar. What is correct is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "anta waliyyi fi al-dunya wa al-akhirah" (you are my ally/wali in this world and the Hereafter), as will come in the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) later (no. 4702) with a strong chain.
