It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab that he said: "Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered the people and consulted them about the day from which the date (calendar) should be written. Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'From the day on which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) emigrated and left the land of polytheism.' So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) acted upon that and fixed the calendar accordingly."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: (1) This chain is hasan up to Sa'id bin al-Musayyab.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is because of Uthman bin Ubayd Allah; a group narrated from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Although this narration of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from Umar is mursal, the expert scholars (hudhdhaq) count it among "the strongest of the mursal narrations", because of Sa'id's great standing. So much so that Abu Hatim al-Razi said: "It enters into the musnad (connected) figuratively", and Ahmad bin Hanbal said: "If Sa'id's narration from Umar is not accepted, then whose will be accepted?!"
