It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "The people erred in the count (of the Hijri calendar): they did not reckon from the year of his (peace and blessings be upon him) prophetic mission, nor from the year of his (peace and blessings be upon him) death; rather, they reckoned the dates only from the time of his (peace and blessings be upon him) arrival in Madinah al-Munawwarah."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts this word has been distorted to "bay'atihi", whereas the correct word is established from all the other sources recording the report.
Grading: (2) This report is sahih, and this chain is hasan because of "Abu al-Husayn Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Khayyat" (Ibn Tamim al-Qantari), and he has been corroborated. Technical note: Abu Ma'mar is "Isma'il bin Ibrahim al-Qati'i", and Abu Hazim is "Salamah bin Dinar al-Madani". Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (3934) narrated it through the route of Abd Allah bin Maslamah from Abd al-Aziz bin Abi Hazim, with this same chain. Details of the narration: But he did not say in his narration that "the people erred in the count". Note / Clarification: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Fath" (11/511): "What is meant by his saying 'the people erred in the count' is that they neglected it and left it, then (later) made it up. He did not mean that what they did (beginning the calendar from the Hijrah) was wrong. It is also possible that he did mean this, and that he held that beginning the calendar from the Prophetic mission or from the death (of the Prophet) would have been better; this view also has some justification, but the preponderant view is otherwise. And Allah knows best."
