It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qays bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) set out secretly (for the emigration), they passed by a slave who was grazing goats. The two of them asked him for milk to drink, and he said: "I have no goat that gives milk, except this one young she-goat which became pregnant at the beginning of winter, but she miscarried, and now no milk is left in her udder." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call her." He brought her, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held her fast, passed his hand over her udder and supplicated, until she began to give milk. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) brought a shield; he (peace and blessings be upon him) milked into it and gave Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to drink, then milked again and gave the shepherd to drink, then milked again and drank himself. Then the shepherd said: "I ask you by Allah, who are you? For by Allah, I have never seen anyone (so blessed) like you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I tell you, will you keep my secret?" He said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah." He said: "Are you the one about whom Quraysh claim that he has abandoned his religion (a Sabi')?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is what they say." He said: "Then I bear witness that you are the Prophet of Allah, and I bear witness that the message you have brought is the truth, and that no one could do this except a Prophet; and I will follow you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will not be able to do that (come with us) today; but when news reaches you that I have prevailed, then come to us."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
