Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih, and the narrators of this chain are thiqah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, there is disagreement over it from al-Sha'bi (Amir bin Sharahil) as to whether it is "mawsul" (connected) or "mursal". Dawud bin Abi Hind reported it from al-Sha'bi as "mawsul", as in the author's narration here. Dawud was corroborated in this by "Jabir al-Ju'fi", who is referred to here without being named, whereas his name is stated explicitly in the narration of al-Bazzar (see Kashf al-Astar 1755) and in Ibn al-Muqri's "al-Mu'jam" (134).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibrahim bin Tahman also reported it from al-Sha'bi as "mawsul", in Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani's "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (79), but he mentioned "al-Nu'man bin Bashir" in place of (the Companion) Jabir bin Abd Allah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Also, Mujalid bin Sa'id reported it from al-Sha'bi as "mawsul", in Musnad Ahmad (28/17079) and elsewhere, but he mentioned (the Companion) Abu Mas'ud Uqbah bin Amr al-Ansari. And note that Mujalid is a "da'if" (weak) narrator.
Reference / Source: The mawsul narration of Dawud bin Abi Hind found with the author (al-Hakim) was narrated by al-Bazzar (see Kashf al-Astar 1755) and Ibn al-Muqri in "al-Mu'jam" (134) through two routes from Qabisah bin Uqbah, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it in "al-Musnad" (see al-Matalib al-Aliyah 4241), Abu Ya'la in "al-Musnad al-Kabir" (see al-Matalib al-Aliyah), and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tarikh Baghdad" (5/44 and 9/456) via Mu'awiyah bin Hisham from Sufyan al-Thawri.
Details of the narration: Isma'il bin Abi Khalid also narrated it from al-Sha'bi, found in Ibn Abi Shaybah (14/599), al-Fakihi's "Akhbar Makkah" (2540) and al-Dulabi's "al-Kuna wa al-Asma'" (90), and this narration is longer than the one here.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Isma'il bin Abi Khalid was corroborated in reporting it as "mursal" by Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah, found in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" (4/8), Musnad Ahmad (28/17078) and al-Bayhaqi's "al-Dala'il" (2/451).
Important point / Preferred view: The more likely view (ashbah) is that it is mursal from al-Sha'bi.
Grading: However, this narration is authentically established from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) as mawsul (with a connected chain) through a route other than al-Sha'bi's, as has passed earlier (no. 4297).
Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih, and this chain is hasan because of Mahmish bin Isam.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group narrated from Mahmish, and al-Hakim described him with the title "al-mu'addal" (one declared upright), and he has also been corroborated.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (30/18512 and 18568), al-Bukhari (3924, 3925, 4941) and al-Nasa'i (11602) narrated it through various routes from Shu'bah, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: All of them added in it the mention of "Bilal bin Rabah" (may Allah be pleased with them) along with Ammar bin Yasir and Sa'd bin Malik.
Note / Clarification: The story of the arrival of Mus'ab bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) (in Madinah) will come later through the route of Isra'il from Abu Ishaq (nos. 6784 and 6814). Also, the mention of the people of Madinah welcoming the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will come later (no. 4328), but that will be from the hadith of al-Bara' which he narrates from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).
