Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4283

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: How shall I know that you are the Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you think: if I call this cluster (bunch of dates) from this date palm, will you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He said: Yes. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) called the cluster, and it began to come down from the tree until it fell to the ground; then it came hopping until it reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to it: "Go back," and it went back to its place.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is hasan on account of Sharik (who is Ibn 'Abdullah al-Nakha'i) and Simak (who is Ibn Harb), and both of them have been corroborated (mutaba'ah). Abu Zabyan is "Husayn bin Jundub al-Kufi".
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3628) recorded it via Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari, from Muhammad bin Sa'id Ibn al-Asbahani, with this same chain.
Grading: And he said: "This hadith is hasan sahih."
Reference / Source: This hadith is found with al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (3/ 3) with this same chain.
Details of the narration: It contains this addition: "fa-aslama al-a'rabi" (so the Bedouin became Muslim).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (3/ 1954) recorded it similarly via Abu Mu'awiyah, from al-A'mash, from Abu Zabyan.
Details of the narration: But in it, it is stated that this Bedouin was a man from "Banu 'Amir", and that after seeing that sign (of the tree) he said: "O family of Banu 'Amir! I have never seen a greater sorcerer than I have today."
Reference (other): In Ibn Mandah's "al-Iman" (133) and al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 16), via Muhammad bin Abi 'Ubaydah al-Mas'udi, from his father, from al-A'mash, from Abu Zabyan, the words are: "The 'Amiri said: O family of 'Amir bin Sa'sa'ah! I will never blame you for anything you say" (i.e. he affirmed him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad contradicted the (other) students of al-A'mash, as found in Ibn Hibban (6523) and elsewhere; he narrated it from al-A'mash, from Salim bin Abi al-Ja'd, from Ibn 'Abbas (like the narration of Abu 'Ubaydah al-Mas'udi), but he mentioned "Salim bin Abi al-Ja'd" in place of Abu Zabyan.
Important point: Ibn Mandah said: "The hadith of Abu Zabyan is more likely (preponderant)." And at the end of this narration the Bedouin said: "O family of 'Amir bin Sa'sa'ah! By Allah, I will not deny him in anything."
Note / Clarification: Al-Bayhaqi says: "It is possible that he (the Bedouin) (at first) thought it was sorcery, then came to know that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was not a sorcerer, so he believed and affirmed him."
