Grading: (1) This hadith is sahih provided that Muhammad bin al-Munkadir's hearing from Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him) is established, and that is the "preponderant" (rajih) view.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in the narrators of this chain (la ba'sa bihi). However, there is disagreement over Usamah bin Zayd (al-Laythi) in it: 'Ubaydullah bin Musa (as in the author's narration here), 'Uthman bin 'Umar bin Faris and Khalaf bin Musa al-Balkhi narrated it from Usamah, from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, without mentioning any intermediary between the two. But 'Abdullah bin Wahb (as will come in narration 6695) and Ja'far bin 'Awn contradicted them; both of them narrated it from Usamah bin Zayd, from Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin 'Uthman, from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, i.e. they added "Muhammad bin 'Abdullah al-'Uthmani" to the chain, and he is a "saduq" narrator in whom there is no harm. Also, Usamah bin Zayd's hearing from Ibn al-Munkadir is authentic as well, and Usamah bin Zayd is corroborated (mutaba'ah) in narrating from Ibn al-Munkadir.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for Muhammad bin al-Munkadir's hearing from Safinah, it is "very possible". For Safinah was alive until the time of al-Hajjaj al-Thaqafi's governorship of the Hijaz on behalf of 'Abd al-Malik bin Marwan, as Sa'id bin Jumhan said: "I met him (Safinah) at Batn Nakhlah in the time of al-Hajjaj" (Batn Nakhlah is a place between Makkah and al-Ta'if). Al-Hajjaj received the governorship of the Hijaz after the killing of 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them) (in 73 AH), so Safinah was alive at that time. Al-Dhahabi stated with certainty in "al-Siyar" that Ibn al-Munkadir was born some years after 30 AH (bid' wa thalathin), and by that reckoning Muhammad bin al-Munkadir's age at that time comes to 34 years. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar took a view contrary to al-Dhahabi's in "al-Tahdhib"; he relied on Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah's statement that "Ibn al-Munkadir reached a little over 70 years", together with the view that he died in 130 or 131 AH; on this basis he stated with certainty that Ibn al-Munkadir's birth falls a little before 60 AH, and concluded that his narration from Safinah is "mursal".
Important point: But it escaped al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) that Safinah was alive until the time of al-Hajjaj's rule, that is, at least until 73 AH. Therefore (even by Ibn Hajar's reckoning) Muhammad bin al-Munkadir's age at that time comes to at least 14 years, and the hearing of someone of that age is by no means impossible. And this is stated explicitly in the narration of Khalaf bin Musa al-Balkhi which al-Bukhari quoted in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (3/ 195): from Usamah bin Zayd, from Ibn al-Munkadir, who said: "I heard Safinah say" (and then he mentioned the hadith).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Moreover, al-Bukhari (as al-Tirmidhi reported in "al-'Ilal al-Kabir" 219) declared authentic Ibn al-Munkadir's hearing from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), although according to the correct view she died in 57 AH. Likewise his hearing from 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them) is established, as al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1/ 219), and al-Hajjaj killed Ibn al-Zubayr in 73 AH. Ibn al-Munkadir was present when al-Hajjaj was bombarding Ibn al-Zubayr with the catapult during his siege, as Abu Dawud narrated in "al-Zuhd" (389) via Hisham bin 'Urwah from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, who said: "If only you had seen Ibn al-Zubayr praying under the shade of a tree as if he were one of its branches, while the catapult (stone) came from this side, and he would not even turn towards it."
Important point: From these proofs al-Dhahabi's view (in determining his date of birth) appears preponderant. Allah the Exalted knows best.
General principle: Even if, for argument's sake, the view that it is "mursal" were accepted, the mursal narrations of Ibn al-Munkadir are among "the best of the mursal narrations" (ajwad al-marasil). Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah said: "I have not seen anyone more worthy than Ibn al-Munkadir of saying 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said' without being asked who (the intermediary) was"; al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Tahdhib" that the reason for this was his extreme care (taharri) (in narration).
Details of the narration: This story is also narrated from Safinah via another "weak" route, as will come.

Reference / Source: Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi recorded it in abridged form in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1195), and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (4/ 269), via 'Ali bin 'Asim al-Wasiti, from Abu Rayhanah 'Abdullah bin Matar, from Safinah, who said: "I met the lion; I said: I am Safinah, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: The lion struck the ground with its tail and sat down."
Grading: 'Ali bin 'Asim is "da'if al-hadith" (weak in hadith).
