It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Amrah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a military expedition when the people faced severe hunger. The people asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to slaughter some of their riding animals, and said: In this way Allah will bring us to our destination. When Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had decided to permit them to slaughter their riding animals, he said: O Messenger of Allah, what will be our state when we meet the enemy tomorrow hungry and on foot? But, O Messenger of Allah, if you see fit, call the people with whatever is left of their provisions. So the people began to bring a handful of food or a little more; the one who brought the most among them came with a sa' of dates. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered all of it, then stood up and supplicated with whatever Allah willed. Then he called the whole army with their containers and ordered them to fill them from it. They did not leave a single container in the whole army without filling it, and yet as much food as before remained. At that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled so broadly that his blessed molars became visible, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah, and I bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah. Any believing servant who meets Allah with these two testimonies will be saved from the fire of Hell."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: (1) In manuscript (Z) this word is "zahrahum".
Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted (tahrif) into "yahtashu" or "yahtasu".
Grading: (3) This chain is extremely weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ahmad bin 'Isa al-Lakhmi (who is al-Khashshab al-Tinnisi) is "da'if jiddan" (very weak), and some declared him a liar. Important point: But this hadith is authentically established from al-Awza'i via routes other than this (weak) one. Reference / Source: Ahmad (24/ 15449) and al-Nasa'i (8742 and 10912) recorded it via 'Abdullah bin al-Mubarak, and Ibn Hibban (221) via al-Walid bin Muslim and Muhammad bin Shu'ayb. All three narrate it from al-Awza'i with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (shahid) by the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri or Abu Hurayrah (the narrator is in doubt), with the same story, in Musnad Ahmad (17/ 11080), Sahih Muslim (27) and Ibn Hibban (6530).
