Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word has been corrupted (tahrif) into "idh ma ilayya", and in manuscripts (S) and ('A) its place was left blank (bayad). We have entered it correctly from al-Bayhaqi's narration in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 5/ 489, which he transmitted from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, and al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir also quoted it in "Musnad al-Faruq" (969) and "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" 1/ 190.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word is "haqqahu", whereas what has been entered (muthbat) here is correct according to al-Bayhaqi's narration.
Grading: Its chain is "very weak", because 'Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam is alone in narrating it, and he is weak by agreement, especially when he is alone in narrating from his father.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for Abu al-Harith al-Fihri being named "'Abdullah bin Muslim" and his teacher being named "Isma'il bin Maslamah" in al-Hakim's chain, the strong presumption is that both names have been corrupted (tahrif). The reason is that a group other than Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Hanzali narrated this report and said: "from Abu al-Harith Ahmad bin Sa'id (who is Ibn 'Amr), from 'Abdullah bin Isma'il, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam." This is the correct chain. A group narrated from Ahmad bin Sa'id bin 'Amr, and Maslamah bin Qasim declared him trustworthy. But his teacher "'Abdullah bin Isma'il" (who in some narrations is specified as "Abu 'Abd al-Rahman Ibn Abi Maryam") we have not been able to identify, and apparently he is "majhul" (unknown), so this is another "defect" ('illah) in this report. Allah knows best.
Grading: Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" and Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (as Ibn al-Qayyim reported in a treatise of his, p. 78) judged this narration to be "mawdu'" (fabricated), and Ibn al-Qayyim agreed with them. All of them laid the responsibility for it on 'Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam.
Important point: Ibn Taymiyyah said in "Majmu' al-Fatawa" 1/ 254: al-Hakim's narrating this hadith is one of the things for which he was criticised, because he himself wrote in his book "al-Madkhal ila Ma'rifat al-Sahih min al-Saqim" that "'Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam narrated fabricated hadiths from his father, and it is not hidden from the experts in the hadith discipline who examine them that the burden (responsibility) for them lies on him."
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 5/ 488-489 from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Saghir" (992) and "al-Awsat" (6502) via Muhammad bin Dawud bin Aslam al-Sadafi, Abu Bakr al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (956) from Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Dawud, and Abu al-Husayn Ibn al-Muzaffar (as in "Jami' al-Athar" 1/ 471) from Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Zahr. All three of them (Muhammad bin Dawud, Ibn Abi Dawud and Muhammad bin 'Abdullah) narrate it from Abu al-Harith Ahmad bin Sa'id al-Fihri, from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman 'Abdullah bin Isma'il, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam.
Note / Clarification: However, al-Ajurri's narration is "mawquf" (not raised to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: Al-Ajurri recorded it in abridged form in "al-Shari'ah" (950) via Abu Marwan al-'Uthmani (Muhammad bin 'Uthman bin Khalid), from his father, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, from his father, as "maqtu'".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He made it the narration of Ibn Abi al-Zinad, which is an "error" (wahm) of 'Uthman bin Khalid al-'Uthmani (the father of Abu Marwan), for he is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned).
Note / Clarification: Rather, he had earlier brought a report of his at number (4176), but that was his narration from his father which was "mawquf" on him (as his own statement).
