It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remembered (Allah) abundantly, spoke little idle talk, made the prayer long and the sermon short, and never hesitated to walk with a slave or a widow in order to fulfil their need.
Imam al-Hakim says: I have presented these sahih hadiths about the noble character of Sayyiduna al-Mustafa (peace and blessings be upon him) as proofs of prophethood, in the light of these sayings of Allah Almighty: "And We chose them, knowingly, above the worlds." [Surah al-Dukhan: 32] And the saying of Allah Almighty: "Allah knows best where to place His message." [Surah al-An'am: 124] And the saying of Allah: "Nun. By the pen and what they write, you are not, by the favour of your Lord, a madman. And indeed, for you is a reward that will never end, and indeed, you are of a most exalted character." Now, after this, consider further sahih signs.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: This chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): But no one in the world has narrated this "text" (matn) with this "chain" (isnad), except what we found here in the source manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak". Our strong presumption is that this is an old error in which, through "intiqal al-basar" (the eye slipping), the eye moved to the text of the narration before this one, so (the scribe) attached this chain to that (previous) text. Important point: Whereas al-Bayhaqi, in his books "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 10/ 192, "al-Dala'il" 1/ 316 and "al-Adab" (149), narrated from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim with this very chain the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), whose words are: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was more modest than a virgin in her seclusion, and when he disliked something we would recognise it in his blessed face." It is this hadith that fits here in the chapter on the noble attributes (shama'il) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Reference / Source: This is the hadith which Ahmad (in several places), al-Bukhari (3562, 6102, 6119), Muslim (2320), Ibn Majah (4180) and Ibn Hibban (6306-6308) recorded via various routes from Shu'bah with this same chain of his.
2/ 75. Note / Clarification: It is like this in our manuscripts, and this is the reading of the whole body of reciters (which is in the plural form) except Ibn Kathir and Hafs from 'Asim, who both read it in the singular. For details see Ibn al-Jawzi's "Zad al-Masir" 2/ 75.
