It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that whenever Jibril (peace be upon him) came down and recited 'Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim' (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would know that it was the beginning of a new surah.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

(1) حديث صحيح، وهذا إسناد ضعيف لضعف المثنَّى بن الصَّباح، لكنه متابع فيما تقدم برقم (763) و (764). Grading: This hadith is sahih (in terms of its text). Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, this chain is "weak" because of the weakness of al-Muthanna bin al-Sabbah, but it is corroborated (mutaba'ah) in the narrations that passed at numbers (763) and (764). وهذا الطريق هو مكرر الطريق المتقدم برقم (762). Note / Clarification: This route is the same one that passed at number (762) (it is repeated here).
