It is narrated from Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her); she said: When the coming of revelation to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was delayed, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was deeply grieved by it. Seeing his grief, I said: "Your Lord has left you alone (as a trial) because of the distress He sees in you." Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "(O Prophet,) your Lord has neither forsaken you nor is He displeased with you." [Al-Duha: 3]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it because of irsal (a missing Companion link) in it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: There is no harm in its narrators (la ba'sa bihim), Technical note / Defect ('illah): but the narration of 'Urwah (bin al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam) from his father's paternal aunt Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her) is "mursal" (because he did not live in Khadijah's time). Reference / Source: It is in "Sirat Ibn Ishaq" in the transmission of Yunus bin Bukayr (167). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Dawud in "A'lam al-Nubuwwah" (as in "al-Fath" 4/ 311) made it "mawsul" (connected) by mentioning 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), but this is not correct. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 7/ 60 from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain. Reference / Source: Al-Dulabi recorded it in "al-Dhurriyyah al-Tahirah" (29) via Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Jabbar. Reference / Source: Sunayd bin Dawud recorded it in his "Tafsir" (as in "Fath al-Bari" 4/ 311), Ibn Abi Shaybah at 11/ 497, and al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 30/ 232, via Waki' bin al-Jarrah; and Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (as in "Fath al-Bari" 4/ 311) and al-Wahidi in "Asbab al-Nuzul" (859) via Abu Mu'awiyah Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir. Both of them (Waki' and Abu Mu'awiyah) narrated it from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, that he said: "Jibril was slow in coming", and then mentioned the hadith. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is more clearly "mursal". However, Sunayd erred in his narration by mentioning 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in place of Khadijah. Reference / Source: Isma'il al-Qadi recorded it in "Ahkam al-Qur'an" (as in "al-Fath" 4/ 311), al-Tabari at 30/ 231 and Abu Dawud in "A'lam al-Nubuwwah" (as in "al-Fath") via 'Abdullah bin Shaddad, beginning: "Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her)", and then mentioned the hadith. This too is a "mursal" narration. (1797). Important point: The correct position in this story is that these (insulting) words were said by a polytheist woman of Quraysh, as stated in the hadith of Jundub bin 'Abdullah al-Bajali in al-Bukhari (1125) and Muslim (1797). Reference / Source: In the author's narration number (3989) it was specified earlier that the woman who said this was the wife of Abu Lahab (Umm Jamil). 4/ 311. Important point: This is the correct and fitting position, because it cannot be expected of a great woman like Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she would say such (hurtful) words to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor was it her way to say such a thing. She was his (peace and blessings be upon him) perfect believing and consoling life companion. Grading: This explanation is far better than the one offered by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" 7/ 60, that "if this narration is authentic, perhaps Khadijah said it as a question or out of concern". It is also better than the explanation given by Ibn Kathir in his "Tafsir" 8/ 446, that "if it is authentic, perhaps she said it out of regret and sorrow". Note / Clarification: A group of scholars firmly denied that this could be a statement of Khadijah, among them Ibn al-Munayyir, as mentioned in "Fath al-Bari" 4/ 311.
