It is narrated from Thabit that Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: How many of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) hairs were white? He said: Allah Almighty protected him from (excessive) old age; there were only nineteen or eighteen white hairs on his blessed head.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. These words (Allah protected him from old age) are well known from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), but as a saying of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) they are very gharib (singular).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Muslim is Ibrahim bin 'Abdullah bin Muslim al-Kajji, and Thabit is (the well-known Successor) Thabit bin Aslam al-Bunani. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded this narration in his Musnad 21/ (13662) and Ibn Hibban at (6292), via two routes from Hammad bin Salamah. Grading: This is a shadh (unacceptable) narration. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it at 19/ (12474) via Abu Ya'qub Ishaq bin 'Uthman al-Kilabi, from Thabit. Details of the narration: Thabit says: I asked Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the hair of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had turned white. He replied: Allah (Mighty and Majestic) took the soul of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and did not blemish him with old age (white hair); on the day he died there were not even thirty (30) white hairs in his blessed head and beard. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The author's firm judgement that these words are "gharib" (unusual) as a statement of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) and well known as a statement of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is the opposite of the reality. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For words with the same meaning are narrated via Humayd al-Tawil from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ahmad 20/ (12054) with the words: "lam yushan bi al-shayb" (old age did not blemish him). Also, via Abu Iyas from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), exactly the same words as those in the preceding narration of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) are narrated in Muslim (2341). Allah the Exalted knows best. Reference / Source: (3)
